Thanks for the kind words, Carole. Today's news about the footballer highlights how treacherous depression is. Many of us will understand how 'easy' it would be to suddenly act out on the feeling and also how having been behaving relatively normally, others after the tragedy would fail to comprehend the inner turmoil that had been endured.

It is important for carers and sufferers to know that the most dangerous periods, as far as depression and suicidal thinking are concerned, are I believe, just as one is going down and right at the end of the depression, probably because it is at such times that one has slightly more energy.

Keep safe everybody, not wishing to cause offence to anybody, but safety through understanding.

so pleased to see this thread is still going after such a long time - I've changed my board name from Ann of Green Gables by the way!!!

not sure if any of you have heard the sad news today that Wales football captain, Gary Speed aged 42, was found dead this morning having committed suicide - everyone is devastated.

However, I am hopeful that some good will come out of this terrible sadness in that it will highlight the plight of those suffering from depression and any form of mental illness - it must be talked about, not spoken about behind closed doors but out in the open as any other illness would be discussed

Gary was on a BBC sports TV programme and looked fine so I suspect he was suffering from clinical depression - something which I have but control with medication. Clinical depression sufferers generally donlt know they have it - I certainly didn't - they go around with a happy face and a cheerful demeanour but inside things are quite diffrerent

I attempted suicide back in 1996 - failed obviously - but it was only then I knew I had clinical depression - so you always have to be looking beneath the veneer of the happy face

hope I've not upset anyone here - not my intention :-D

Thank you hazel & Ann. Life is extremely difficult for all of us.

Am trying to get back on an even keel. mostly by translating a lot of recipes for one of my daughters, from Dutch to English. Many words cannot be translated, so it is a big challenge, maybe a good thing!!. Have done about 5, another 8-9 to go.Phew!!

It is a very difficult time of the year for very many people, of this I am veyy aware, so will keep them all in mind, during the worst periods.

Lavender I think you did really well to stay. It is such an effort when you're feeling depressed. Walking should also be good for you.
Mary the first time I saw Indians in Florida I could hardly hold my excitement! To see Eskimos aged six would have been so esciting.
Having the piss took out of me here! Steve has two mates round to watch football and they are laughing at me squinting. I found my glasses now I aparently look librarian! Lol

Oh Lavender how I would love a walk across the fields, but I'll leave the furry friend at home.
Delighted to report that my 14 y/o granddaughter miniMary is home from hospital, and in true form, refused to go to sleep last night until she had finished some homework!! So worried that her marks will slip, because she has been off school most of the past week. Still very sore, but doing well.
I had my appendix out at 10 y/o, not long after we came to Canada, it was quite an experience, I was in a 6 bed ward with other kids, including 2 Eskimos!!! Never thought, at that age, I would meet a real Eskimo, but in those days a lot of them were transported to Toronto from up north for medical treatment. Later when i worked at the TB Sanitorium, I met many Eskimos, still coming down "to the south" for care. Now Eskimos are referred to as Inuit.
There has been a request for something sweet to eat so I am off to produce some cup-cakes.
Have a good day all, and Lavender, breathe in some of that good air for me!!

Yesterday was a terrible day but today I am on the up, thank you for your kind words maxiMary. I've had a 40 min walk across the fields with my furry pal and am looking forward to a special family day tomorrow. Not sure if I shall get back to that group, I'm rapidly feeling disillusioned. If I don't go again I shall make Fri a day out in town, with lunch, enjoying getting dressed up and having some ''me'' time.

Hope you are doing alright, Mary. Thinking of you, x :-)

Well done Lavender for staying 40 minutes!! You made the effort to go, thought of others in taking treats to the group and helped the girl with her card project. You got out of the house and, even if the group itself didn't seem to be much help, looking at the big picture, you did well. Now pat yourself on the back, be good to yourself.
Hugs

A month into the mhs group. They haven't redeemed themselves since I was told to arrive at 11.00am each week, I couldn't understand why everybody looked so settled on my arrival. It meant that a lovely craft activity, making jewellery which would have been very enjoyable was very well under way by the time I arrived, it had started at 10.00am. I'm surprised that M*nd would make such simple mistakes when it takes a big effort for some folk to get themselves there. Wasn't good anyway and it did little to improve my mood. I'd made cakes for the group to enjoy and taken a carrier of unused xmas craft card kits etc. for a girl who has been enjoying making such at home. I was too grumpy and depressed to stay much longer than 40 mins. :-0 :-(

Mary pleased you have sold the ATV and are able to have your roof done. That was a very good win. You are not alone with your lack of interest in Christmas. We are giving money to the nephews and niece we still give to (the others are over 18 when we stop giving) Our two kids and Daughters boyfriend will get a few small gifts and money. As for ourselves we don't want anything so our gift to each other is to decorate our bedroom. Mum said don't bother she doesn't want anything but I got her some little things (slippers and, smelly) so I've just about done. No food bought, again I'm not going mad the shops are only closed one day.

Thank you Ann Glos, , I am working on my mood, for some reason have no interest in Christmas this year, which is just not my norm, but hauled the big Christmas wreath out of the cellar this evening, so will hang it outside tomorrow, thinking I may make several red velveteen bows and attach them to the lilac bush beside my front porch, with a few white twinkly lights as well. Everyone here seems to be unaware of the current economic situation, massive displays of lights on many houses, and it's not even December yet.
I'd rather focus on feeding the tribe. Somebody find where my energy has gone and return it please. Funnily enough Sarah has been singing Christmas carols since October, she must know Christmas is coming. very cold here tonight and the sky earlier looked as if the wretched s-stuff is on its way. Guess I should buy some winter boots, threw mine out last spring and of course haven't got around to replacing them.
Finally sold the ATV and have the roof being done in a week or so, that was a beneficial win!!

Well I am back, been down and weary, with increased pain levels, but starting to pull up now. Today has been a better day on all sides. Good thing as miniMary had to have emergency appendectomy last night, she had only 24 hours discomfort, but once diagnosed, they moved quickly.
I survived my (and Colleen's) birthday as well - don't like the way the numbers are climbing higher and higher, I don't really feel I am as old as the numbers tell LOL.
So sorry to see the sadness some are experiencing, my apologies that I have been absent and apparently unsupportive.
BTW Ben I also have a few Coombs in my tree - Hetty 1834, Ruth 1836, and an unknown Coombs (their father) ca 1814.
Hope everyone is on their feet, think of you all often.
Still trying to decide as to whether or not to renew in January. Found a few distant rellies, made several dear friends, but . . .

Hazel, I think you and I have 'spoken' before now. Thank you for your good wishes for my daughter's birthday.

Horrible time for my s.i.l and his family. HIs mum was a lovely, rather eccentric type of woman, just the sort that is needed in this tough world. I reallly liked her a lot, and am soooo sad she has left this world, which is poorer for her absence. Lovely woman!!!

Am still trying to catch up with the enormous amount of cleaning, washing etc. which comes with the 'visit.

Thank you Ann for the good wishes on my daughter's birthday. It wasn't celebrated at all this year.

My daughter & s.i.l took their eldest daughter and son back to Eindhoven airport an hour ago, because they had to get back to Ireland for work & uni, their youngest daughtewr & husband left by car this morning for the long car trek back to Brittany. Their second eldest daughter was very upset that she couldn't be here for the cremation, but she gave birth to a son a couple of weeks ago, so had to stay home with him & her two small daughters. The house feels very empty now, after 2 intense weeks of their company.
We have another big problem to solve a.s.a.p, which is quite awful to be honest.Very difficult as a mother to just watch helplessly but not being able to really help, I can only listen and 'be there' all the time for this daughter.
Does anyone know why it is so difficult to get on this thread? I mean, when you click on 'more pages', the dreaded error message keeps rearing it's ugly head, so I mostly give up.It was the same with Daff's thread....bless her, such sad news.
Have to go put another load of washing (all those duvet covers etc. on top of the 'normal' wash) in the machine & hang the present lot up.Have been doing the washing every day, often twice a day.....needless to say...

Yes Ann, I will try post more often. This year has been quite horrible up to now, hope that the new year will prove to be a better, kinder one for all of us.
