Oh David glad to see you posting. I am still driving just turned 75 but honestly am aware that my reflexes may not be as sharp as once they were after 3 near-misses in the past couple of weeks. Now today it is snowing quite steadily and I am disinclined to venture out. Can't afford winter tyres so I wait till the roads are salted and then hope for the best in case of 'black ice' not being visible and sending cars skidding off the road into ditches and each other! Greetings to everyone else on the thread - more than 10 years now since we found each other and developed real friendships. Carol seems to be doing well now - her life appears to have calmed down and she sounds happy. I keep very busy & my daughter finally has a full-time job after almost 8 years of unemployment & the deatth of her wonderful partner 2 years ago. Her children are now 17 to 21 and 2 in Uni doing well. The 2 with autism are still in school not learning much but fairly happy. My darling wee grandson is wee no more - over 6' tall and very strong- usually happy now and learning to self regulate his once-frequent violent outbursts. His Mum still has several broken windows in her house but now she is working should be able to replace them gradually. My other daughter who is intellectually challenged is very high anxiety and resisting taking her meds - the same one I am on but she thinks it is making her fat!! She is increasingly obsessive in her "topic of the day" and finally we have a referral for her to be seen by a psychologist and then consult with a psychiatrist so hopefully we can help her calm down. Her panic attacks are increasingly disruptive where I cannot get her out the door or into the car and her hygeine is suffering neglect. The last 3 days I have been asking her to help me put up the Christmas tree which is not easy with me being one-handed now but still it sits in pieces in its container. Shades of myself years ago when I couldnt get out the door all summer or drive on the highway. Sorry to ramble - I have missed my almost daily check-in here. Group hug and a happy Christmas season to all. |

Well David it seems we are all older than we were when our fearless leader Carol started this thread. Thinking of Carol especially now as her life has hit a big bump in the road. Last September I had septicaemia and when released from the hospital 2 weeks later I could only walk a few feet and had to use a wheeled walker until I got my strength back - so I empathize completely with your need for mobility aids. I have regained enough strength to be walking now without aids but feel badly for those who need them. Thankfully they have progressed beyond the simple A frames. Here we have an outfit called "For the Needy not the Greedy" and I was there yesterday looking for a finger splint and saw the huge supply of donated wheelchairs and wheeled walkers. Tho purchase price they charge is absolutely minimal and I know sometimes they give them in desperate circumstances. It's a brilliant service to the whole area for both disabled children and adults. Good luck to you in improving your situation. I hope there is assistance available for you there. Certainly an assessment by an Occupational Therapist would be a good place to start. |

Tbh you can buy/borrow almost anything to help mobility. Wheel chairs that are adapted for rigid leg/s that can be wheeled by the patient, particularly in the house have been around for ages. OH and I both have mobility arm chairs which again have the facility for rigid leg/s and are a godsend for getting up and down, for me especially after my broken/renewed hip!! You do have to shop around a bit (on line!) to find the right things, but it's all there if you can find it |

David, do you have the right sort of chair in your living room to allow you to sit comfortably with you leg rigid (as I think it is)? If not there should be one that you could get. |

So from what you're saying, you don't have to spread any time in your bedroom unless you choose to. That must be a good thing? |

Well there you go David, that sounds pretty positive. A walking frame rather than crutches might be easier, but at least you can presumably get as far as your sitting room to sit in getting you out of your bedroom. |

David, while not wishing to be disrespectful, surely after all this time, you have mobility aids that would allow you access to your bungalow and garden. I worked for years with elderly disabled people and it was amazing even back then and even after life changing strokes accidents etc, how, with sufficient help and given time most of them managed a degree of meaningful mobility. Perhaps some help from an Occupational Therapist might be helpful to get you the equipment and physical help you need? |

Very nostalgic reading the early days of this thread. Dutch (Joyce), Deanna, Yorkshirecaz, Justice of the peace (Joyce), I had to stop there so many gone, very sad. |
