I remember Hanburys.My mum had one in her little precinct when she moved to Whitefield,Think I've seen one in Didsbury area quite recently.There is a Gym where the Precinct was now.A lot of places I don't recognise! |

In the north east there were department stores called Doggetts. It's still a saying of disbelief round here, as in "If that's the case I'll bare my 'bottom' in Doggetts window. |

Theres still a Budgens in Woodbridge I think just out from Ipswitch as a freind of mine has a cottage that way and its a standing Joke that I call it Bludgeons. |

As a child I remember going to our corner shop, high mahoganny counters. Every thing on shelves behind the counter, Mr Edwards fetching each item one at a time, cutting and weighing cheese, wrapping it in greasproof paper. He had to go to the back room to fetch potatoes etc. My favorite thing was the large glass jars of penny sweets, the shop was next to the school. |
