Hi Liz
I think that Chelsea Girl became River Island.

I vaguely remember a shop here that operated a central system with money and change. I'll have to ask mum which one it was.

So many familiar names!!! Was surprised to hear Blacklers, Owen Owen in Liverpool. Is TJ's still going? Used to hop on a Number 10 bus for that one - many moons ago.

What a great thread!!

Coats 'n 'Ats (C&A) are still alive and kicking in Germany, in fact aren't they a Dutch or German company?

I remember the money/paying system of putting it into a canister and then into a pipe thingy which got sucked through a pipe system to the cashiers and then back again with the receipt and change. In fact, it wasn't THAT long ago my Mums local high street (privately owned) department store was still using it!!!! Well, she does live in the sticks.

I'd almost forgotten about Snob and Bus Stop aswell as Chelsea Girl - how would we have managed without them!! Van Allen too, they were a favourite of mine.

Who remembers the slogans....
John Collier, John Collier, the window to watch.
The matching's unique at A G Meek.

We had a very old established shop in Norwich called Henry Jarvis, sold clothes, household things, and furniture I think, they had those tube things to send the money to the cashier and the change came back the same way. I think our local Co op might have had the same thing. When I found some old newspaper cuttings about my gran's funeral, she died way before I was born, it said the funeral was arranged by Mr Henry Jarvis himself so they must have done funerals too then, and he did it himself cos my gran was so well known in the area.
I can also remember Peacocks where things were incredibly cheap, sort of an old Woolies type store, not the Peacocks that sell clothes now. I can also recall a grocery shop where you went in one door and picked up a basket, walked round and paid on the way out, first sort of supermarket in Norwich, think it was called Elmo's! And what about Stone-Dri! They sold raincoats among other things lol
