Oh lots of memories here! I remember Bellmans wools in Norwich so they must have been a chain, and who remembers the International stores? We had a women's clothing shop called the InScene, think it was the one that became Chelsea Girl! I used to go and buy a skirt and tell my Dad 'it was only £1 10 shillings', (£1.50 now) and he would say 'only?' I think at the time I was earning about £3 something a week!
What about Gordon Thodays, the fabric shop, used to make a lot of my own clothes when I was young and skinny, so went there a lot, could get a skirt (pelmet as Dad called them) out of a remnant!
Happy times. What was the shop called that is now River Island?
I was heartbroken when our C & A closed down, used to buy loads of stuff in there.

Pauldens in Manchester, I visit an old lady who reminises about that shop, and Lewises everytime I see her, also about how she used to sit in the gardens at Piccadilly and eat her butties at dinner time. She cant believe it is all concrete and fountains now. Hasnt been down there in years.

oh yes Valerie - I do remember Meeks - "The matching's unique at A G Meek" !!!
Anyone remember when shops used to use a system of little containers on wires to put the money in and it was transported across the top of the shop to a central cashiers - she sat in a sort of booth, opened the container, took the money and put the change in the container and back it went to the counter!!
