From The TimesSeptember 7, 2007

The most up to date UK news available online at this moment in time for those who have asked...........

Madeleine’s mother is questioned by police as blood tests come backFran Yeoman and Steve Bird
Portuguese police reinterviewed the mother of Madeleine McCann yesterday, amid mounting speculation that the results of forensic science tests on samples taken from Madeleine’s bedroom have given detectives vital new leads. Today they will question her husband, Gerry.

The police interviews have also disrupted the McCanns’ plans to return to England with their two-year-old twins, Sean and Amelie, this Sunday, although it was not clear last night exactly how much longer the family would remain in the Algarve.

The interviews come after Portugal’s PolÍcia Judiciária received a new batch of results from tests conducted on samples taken from the McCanns’ holiday apartment in Praia da Luz.

Scientific analysis of these samples, which included flecks of blood found on Madeleine’s bedroom wall by British sniffer dogs, has raised the prospect that the investigation is entering a new phase.

Experts at the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham have spent the past month analysing the samples, and have attempted to identify the child’s DNA as well as establish whether anyone else was in the room on the night she went missing.

A police source said that the British laboratory had “regularly fed back” progress to the Portuguese detectives, but speculation is growing that the latest results, which have not been made public, could lead to arrests.

Kate McCann, a 39-year-old GP, was driven to the police station in Portimão by her husband at about 2pm yesterday. Before entering the building, she issued a direct plea to her daughter’s abductors to “do the right thing” and return the child or call police.

“We came to Portugal an ordinary family of five,” she said. “We just want to know what happened on May 3 and want to be able to go home one family, reunited.”

Mrs McCann then went inside the police station, accompanied by her lawyer and Mr McCann’s sister, Trisha Cameron, to be questioned by two officers.

Olegário Sousa, a spokesman for the Portuguese police, told journalists: “The meeting is to update the situation and inform the couple of the progress of the inquiry.”

A family friend said last night that although the couple regarded the interviews as a “step forward in the investigation”, they were apprehensive about what they might mean. The need to attend the police station again has meant that the family will not leave Portugal as planned, the friend added, because they will not have time to pack their bags and thank all their supporters in Praia da Luz, where the family have lived since Madeleine disappeared.

The McCanns remain “witnesses” in the investigation. However, it is understood that their highly regarded Lisbon-based lawyer, Carlos Pinto de Abreu, who travelled to the Algarve yesterday to attend the interviews, has applied for them to be legally designated as “assistants”, which would give them more access to information about the investigation.

The McCanns’ team has also contacted the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and they are receiving consular assistance.

I just wish that people in this country had the chance to see what was being said in Portugal. It's a different story totally. If you take the middle ground from the reporting of both countries the whole case is somewhat changed.xx

Budgie,

Besides what Birmingham have told the police...There is more evidence ..but they are not telling...anyone anything..

I don't know how many people are aware of this but Portugal was ruled by a dictatorship until 1974.

The press would not have the freedom that they do now but would be throw into jail without hesitation.

Im my opinion the police still behave..in a very secretive manner.

Nothing is said to nobody...and when you open your eyes
someone will be arrested...

However, having said this...

We are not dealing with "Joe Blogg" but a highly political and socially connected couple...who have the key to a church to come and go as they please....

Best, I don't say no more!

lindy you are entitled to your opinion.i think in a way its good that the police say nothing.it could hinder there investigation.
lets hope they sort this out soon.
i too believe maddie is no longer with us.
ive felt that all along but at the same time like everyone we have held out hope.xxx

Lindy Report 6 Sep 2007 21:57

I watch the news and do not take much notice of what the media have to say...but pay attention to the interviews with the police authorities...

The police have stated that....the forensic results that they received from Birmingham...(which, are not mentioned by the police) are supposed to take eight to ten hours and not one month...has helped them.

This is only partly essential in their investigations.

In my opinion the tests should have been sent to a neutral country...but that is "MY OPINION"

Kate was once again called to the police head quarters.at 2:pm ...to give a statement...not to be interrogated...

People are normally asked to come at two because that is when the lunch break is over...

Why should she been treated any different?

She was not grilled...but only got to see the police at 5pm...

Her husband will be called to deploy in the morning...

Personally, I believe, and hate to say this ...but Maddy is no longer with us...

The long and the short of it is that the police authorities are not saying anything...this is the norm in this country...

If you feel like shooting me down...!!!

I shall not get into an argument with anyone!!!

Thanks for update Muffy.

I looked back at one of my threads on this and a lot of the comments had been removed.
I think people are scared to post even things they read/hear on news incase they get 'jumped on' lol

I am glad you have brought this up again.
That wee girl is in all our thought's and like a lot of others I havent forgotten about her.

I know what has happened, happened but...it still annoys me.

It was on news today and I told my 4yr old grandson I wanted to hear about the little girl who was lost.
He asked if she got lost in tesco :(( I told him I didn't know where she was but a lot of people were looking for her :((
I didn't want to scare the life out him.

I have read it Joy.

But I am now looking for the latest news.

For, as I understand it, further developments were likely this afternoon.

Muffy, and a few others, are far more accomplished at researching the net than I am.

I look forward to learning of anything that they might come across.

I would love to think Maddie is still alive, but I dont think she is. I hate to say it, but I do believe she died that night. I wont add my theory on here, but I do hope there is a conclusion to this story soon and that the person or persons responsible are brought to justice.

Janet in Yorkshire Report 5 Sep 2007 23:23

I have always assumed that the forensic evidence would include not only DNA, but also hairs, fibres, dust etc taken from a range of places, including cars, rather than just blood.
However, press speculation seems to focus purely on blood.

It is a holiday apartment - blood specks could have come from anyone (including staff) who had a nose bleed, cut their finger, grazed their knee etc etc. I too think the blood could well turn out to be a red herring.

I sincerely hope for Maddie's sake that we do eventually find out just what happened.

I too have my own theories, but I keep those to myself. The only thing we do know for certain is that she was no longer in her bed in the apartment. The rest is speculation.
