I went to school with a girl known as Hetty, her name was Hester and it was a family name. Her mother and g.mother were also Hetty/Hester. Might be worth a try.

Terry, There is Hetty Cross aged 20 born Birmingham in Admin.Parish of Bristol in 1901. She is a tailoress. Have you ruled her out? Beryl DUR.

I could be wrong but isn't it short for Henrietta? I remember there being a programme called Hetty Wainthrop Investigates starring Patricia Routledge of Hyacinth "Bouquet" fame.
