Had thought Granddad ROBERT HOLCOMBE (b. approx 1900) came from Ireland & settled in S Wales. Have now been told he had 10 brothers & 1 sister - half settled in small mining village called Coedely (the pit opened in 1901), the others around Pontypridd! Sister is said to have married a (green) grocer & moved to Birmingham. It's also said a cousin called Chris worked for the BBC. I never met MY uncle Edward but know he emigrated to Australia. My father WILLIAM ROBERT joined army before WW2, married my mother & lived in Portsmouth. After war, did a stint with Portsmouth Fire Brigade, was called up to serve in Korea, then re-enlisted: served in REME & RASC, demobbed in 1960. Is anyone able to fill in the gaps of this story? Would be grateful for any help! Regards Frances Olsen |

Frances, FreeBMD has Robert Holcombe born in 1896 in the Cardiff district. Holcombe sounds like it has Devonshire origins. Don't think a name like that would be Irish. Crista |

Frances, Have you looked on the 1901 census. There are is family living in the Cardiff area with 4 sons and one daughter. Looking at FreeBMD I can see another 4 potentional sons too. Names appear to be John, Catherine, Robert, William, Joseph, Ernest, Daniel, Frederick and Leonard. Crista |
