I know we've had a similar thread before regarding computerised telephone calls offering holidays etc and asking you to dial 9 for details, and warning that if you do you will incur huge bills - but I think someone said it was a myth! However, having just had one such call, I telelphoned BT Customer Service who informed me that it is indeed TRUE that if you dial the 9 you will be charged something like £7 per minute or more. SO DON'T DIAL THE 9!! |

There is a simple rule to follow. If you ring a company, you sometimes expect an automated press this button for this etc. But if someone calls you, then this should not happen. If a call you receive asks you to dial or press any button, then hang up. |

Found this on a website Mr Suhail Bhat, spokesman for the Independent Committee For The Supervision Of Standards Of Telephone Information Services - ICSTIS for short - said: "Premium rate lines can only operate in the country they originate in and no-one in the UK can charge any more than £1.50 for a premium rate service. "The technology simply does not exist for the call charges to be reversed simply by pressing the number 9. Also, once a phone has been put down, the call it automatically terminated. |

Yes Carol. Also any operator who proposes to charge more than £20 per call needs their approval. I hope we are right. Bob |
