I'm trying to research my paternal grandfather's ancestors. He was Jesse Sargant and claimed that Max Miller (Thomas Henry Sargent) was his cousin (probably second cousin). My grandfather was born in Godstone, Surrey, Dec 29, 1879. His father was the Sargant of the coal merchants, Sargant & Martin. Where did Sargant become Sargent or vice versa? Any information gratefully received.

I'm doing a one name study of Sargent in North East Lincolnshire and have about 13 variants on the spelling....I guess they made their final choice when they learned to read and write. In our case it was Sargent in the 1851 census and before, but Sergeant in 1861 and since John in Aus
