Yes, Marriage certificate is another place to look I guess. I know the person in question's mother married about 18 months after he was born, he's always listed on census docs as a son-in-law or step-son. Perhaps I'll never know, but I have plenty of other branches to explore anyway :) My mother always knew her father was a B@stard (in spirit if not in fact !) and now we find out that her ggfather was too ;-)

know how you feel had same problem but with my paternal side then to cap it all his fathers side changed names have about 3 names to find still lots of info on my mums side back to 1703 so far so i am still smiling sandra

OH dear. Spent weeks trying to find a birth entry for my GGGfather, eventually found it (with a little help from my friends) and applied for a copy of the certificate... It arrived in the post today, I excitedly opened it and.... no fathers name :( How frustrating ! I guess it's still worth trying to check the parish records to see if there's a father listed at the baptism ? Fortunately this was on my mothers side, so my paternal line (SMITH (argghhhhh!!!), isn't at a dead end... yet.
