Colin, please, thankyou, you are wonderful........ Since downloading all the software of Spybot and AVG, now when I go into internet options, I am getting a message that says "This operation cancelled due to restrictions in operation on this computer". Also, do you have the address of Ad-Aware please. Many thanks, Jacky :-)

Malware is the manufacturer of spyware....easily removed with Adaware. Spybot, a program for removing spyware, does add it's own form of spyware to your computer. As for computer freezing up, although spyware is often the cause of this, not doing the recommended routine maintanence jobs and not retrieving the recommended and critical updates at Microsoft Windows Update site, will surely contribute to the problems you're experiencing....including not being able to download files. Judy :)

For what it's worth: I've been using ad-aware for a few weeks and it seems very easy to use, regular updates appear and it's picked up about five bits of dodgy per day. I have used spybot in the past and found it not quite as easy to use as ad-aware.

Hey Colin! You know me, can't NOT put my two cents worth in....LOL! You do know your stuff! Judy :)

For those of you who have experienced phone calls on your phone bill placed by a dialer....stomp your feet if phone company gives you a hard time....you're not legally responsible for calls not made by you and they will remove the charges. Judy :)

Tracey: By "seek seek" do you mean that, that is the item you can't get rid of? I am going to assume since it was not removable by all that Colin has suggested, that it must be a program that installed itself and you need to uninstall it. Do the following to locate it first and then I can most likely advise, step by step, how to get rid of it. If it's a program, like I suspect, Norton won't get rid of it because it's not a virus.....same with Adaware, it's not spyware but a program. Did you, by any chance, update your Internet Explorer from a site other than the Microsoft Update site? To search for the file do this: 1. Click on START. 2. Click on SEARCH 3. Click on ALL FILES AND FOLDERS 4. To the left of your screen are 3 fields. The first one, where it says ALL OR PART OF THE FILE NAME, type in the name of the file you wish to find on your hard drive. 5. The 2nd field, where it says A WORD OR PHRASE IN THE FILE, leave it blank 6. In the 3rd field, where it says LOOK IN, if LOCAL HARD DRIVE C is not already showing there, use the “V” at the end of the field, scroll and click on LOCAL HARD DRIVE C so that it now appears in the 3rd field. 7. Click on SEARCH. 8. The search results will be listed. Find the name of the file you searched for, place your mouse over the name of the file and RIGHT click on it. Drop down box will appear and at the bottom of the box is PROPERTIES. Click on PROPERTIES. 9. Now a box pops up and there are tabbed labels at the top. Click on GENERAL (it’s probably already showing the GENERAL tab information when the box popped up.) 10. Look for LOCATION and advise me of what it says. It will look something like: C:/Program/ BlahBlahBlah/SEEK SEEK. 11. Also note and advise on what the complete name of the file is....this would be the first thing listed on the GENERAL tab page. What I need to know here is if the name of the program is seekseek.exe as this would indicate a type of program and helps on how to go about getting rid of it. Knowing where the file is, is half the battle.....then we can work on removing it.....DON'T delete....if it is a program it has to be UNINSTALLED. Make sure you type back your response showing it exactly the way it shows in LOCATION so I can follow the file path to advise you how to get rid of it. Let me know how you make out.....Judy:)

Judy Report 8 Feb 2004 16:43

Tracey: This one should be easy enough...it doesn't appear to be a program as it is not an exe file. To get rid of 1 location c:\windows\favorites\media the name nbc video seeker Do this: 1. Click on START. 2. Click on MY COMPUTER (My computer icon may also be on your desktop.) 3. Click on LOCAL HARD DRIVE C 4. Click on the yellow folder labeled WINDOWS. 5. Click on FAVORITES 6. RIGHT click on MEDIA THE NAME NBC VIDEO SEEKER. 7. A drop down box will appear. If one of the options here is UNINSTALL, click on it and follow the prompts to uninstall. If UNINSTALL in not an option, simply delete it. -------------------------------------------------------------------- To get rid of 2 c:\windows\profiles\tracey\favorites\media the name nbc video seeker 1. Click on START. 2. Click on MY COMPUTER (My computer icon may also be on your desktop.) 3. Click on LOCAL HARD DRIVE C 4. Click on the yellow folder labeled WINDOWS. 5. Click on PROFILES 6. Click on TRACEY 7. Click on FAVORITES 8. RIGHT click on MEDIA THE NAME NBC VIDEO SEEKER. 9. A drop down box will appear. If one of the options here is UNINSTALL, click on it and follow the prompts to uninstall. If UNINSTALL in not an option, simply delete it. The items have been deleted to your recycling bin. Delete your recycling bin and run Adaware. The NBC seeker should be gone now. Judy :)
