I have 2 middle names. Violet and Ellen. Violet after my Mum and grandmother and Ellen after my Dad's Mum and his grandmother. When I was at school I used to hate them and would never tell anybody. Now having researched the family I am proud of the names. Sometimes when people as what the V stands for I say Violent or Valentine according to the mood I am in Shirley

My parents were going to call me Michelle, then the beatles hit the charts with their song and Mum got fed up with everyone thinking that was why they picked it, so they chose a christian name they thought was really different....Yvette, but it made middle names awkward so they added Anne. Well they got that one right!! I hated my name growing up as i had an odd surname as well. As a result i was determined to give my children 'normal' names, however i really loved the name Rhian, so compromised by making it a middle name for my daughter, and her first name is Gemma after one of my favourite books as a child, then the world went mad for the name Gemma and everyone started using it. She is always telling me she wishes i had called her Rhian as a first name...so i guess parents will never get it right lol. My sons middle names are son No1 Robert after his father, and son No2 Edward Geoffrey after my much loved Grandad and my husbands father, both who sadly never met their namesakes. Since getting into genealogy i have found that Edward has figured in my grandads family for many generations. So a wise choice? No doubt he will have his own opinion in years to come!! Yvette

My Dad wanted to call me Kathleen but my Mum had other ideas so Kathleen became a middle name - so my Dad could sing, 'I'll Bring You Home Again Kathleen', to me at every opportunity! When I was very young I promised myself I would call any daughter after my Grandmother and I did - Rosina is her middle name. Being a keen genealogist I also gave her a double barrelled name containing my maiden name as blokes are a bit short in our family!

Aileen

Aileen Report 5 Mar 2004 09:36

My middle name is Patricia because my dad apparently liked it. My christian name, Aileen, was chosen by my mum who said she knew a really nice person with the same name!! I have been called Eileen, Elaine and everything else by people over the years but most say they still haven't heard of it and rarely can spell it! Aileenx

Sadly I don't have any family history to my name at all, none of my sisters do either. Chloe Amy. Boring! They heard the name 'Chloe' from a girl who lived down the road. Haven't a clue why it was Amy, my eldest sister wanted me to be called Chloe Sue.... great name! Thanks!! LOL When I have my kids, I will be sticking to family names, most of the time. My two grandmothers, Lily and Grace. I want to use those names. Don't fancy their middle names... (Bertha and Muriel!) LOL. I quite like Lily-Grace. As for a boy, Jakob, after my great grandfather, I want to keep the spelling too!

All of which goes to show that girls should get to choose their own names, and change them with the season....boys don't give a damn. Evidence? Wife #1 couldn't make up her mind about anything and was laid out exhausted after the event, still clutching the shortlist of possible names for our new daughter and worrying about choices. So, I wrote the lot on new daughter's toe tag on the assumption that the little one would eventually make her own choices. Of course she hated them all, and made up her own at age 3, which has stuck with her for 18 years. Wife #2 had 2 boys, much to her chagrin, where we used the one syllable, 3 letter theory because its easier to shout.I'm not sure they know their middle names...or care. John in Aus

My middle name is Roger, not the trendiest name in the world to have when you're growing up! My mother's cousin is called Roger, so that could be where that came from. My brother's is Antony (no letter 'h'), but that came about as I had a mate at school with that name, and my parents liked it. As for my parents, well my mother's is Mary (probably derived from my grandmother's name) but more interestingly, my father's is Beacher! His father's middle name was Beecher, but have no idea where that sprang from and have no-one else in my tree with any connection to that name.

My middle name is Maree after Loch Maree in Scotland! Considering they thought sure I was a boy and my name was chosen as Gordon I'm quite pleased with it really. My two are Andrew John (Andrew after his dad and John after an uncle of mine who died). We call him Drew which I like. and Rebecca Mary (Mary being my mums name and my mum-in-laws middle name). Unfortunately as our surname is Bacon, she is known as Becky Bacon ARGGH!! Lord forbid she ever has to wear glasses...... Names I wish I had chosen are Elliot, Robbie, Joe Girls (now that I've started the searching - Emily, Rachel, Claudia, Annabel. Most of my cousins have already pinched these for their kids. Pamela Maree
