Just dug mine out. Here's some of the clean ones. When a lady says no she means maybe When a lady says maybe she means yes When a lady says yes she's no lady! Love many, trust few and always paddle your own canoe. Don't get kissing at the garden gate, Love may be blind but the neighbours aint. Mel |

Grasp a nettle gentle handed And it stings you for your pains, Grasp it like a man of mettle And it soft as silk remains. 'Tis the same with human nature, Lose them kindly they rebel But be rough as nutmeg graters And the rogues obey you well. G. Miles 19.9.1921 |

He who knows not and knows that he knows not, is a fool; beat him. He who knows not and knows not that he knows, is ignorant; teach him. He who knows and knows not that he knows is asleep; wake him. He who knows, and knows that he knows, is a wise man; follow him. K.E.C. Gillingham 27.10.1921 |

One little gem, which has finally told me where Great Uncle Matthew went. I just need to find out when. Matthew Sutton is my name, Canada is my Dominion. Parkbeg is my dwelling place, Christ is my salvation. And when I am dead and in my grave, And all my bones are rotten, These few lines you will have to read, When I am quite forgotten. Matthew Sutton 4 December 1923. |

Nice to see the thread revived! Ann, I have that one but with dabs of powder. Sylvia, Mine quotes a church rather than chapel. Trish, I have several of those, and remember the one about soap amusing me when I was small. These books were certainly cherished by their owners and now my mother's book lives in my treasures box. |

I must dig out my album, it's in a trunk buried. I can remember one my Dad wrote. Little grains of powder Little pots of paint, make a girl's complexion, look like what they aint. |

From my mother-in-lawa book from about the 1920s-30s If you have a Mother, Cherish her with care, For you never know the miss of her, Til you see her vacant chair. It's hard to lose a friend, When life is full of hope, But it's harder still to lose a towel, When your eyes are full of soap. Friends that are new may be all that is good, But there's never a friend like the old, The former is held by a silver thread, The latter by anchors of gold. Think again before you utter, Words that cause another pain, Broken hearts are slow in mending, If they ever heal again. What's the use of being sorry, When regrets are all in vain, Curb your tongue for just one moment, Think Again. A cheerful friend is like a sunny day. They tried it on the sofa, They tried it on the chair, They tried it on the garden seat, But couldn't do it there. They tried it this way, They tried it that way, Good gracious how they laughed, To think there were so many ways, To be photographed. Oh how I love the Bristol girls, Their bright blue eyes and golden curls, And from their sweet and ruby lips, You get the flavour of fish and chips. He that sitteth on a pin, Shall surely rise again |

A wise old owl lived in an oak, The more she saw, the less she spoke, The less she spoke, the more she heard, Why can't we be like that wise old bird. B. Brocket. 26 July 1922 |

I stood on the bridge at midnight, When a thought came into my head. What a fool I was to be standing there, When I might have been in my bed. R.E.P. 9.6.1925 |

Love is a feeling, a very funny feeling, A feeling that you never felt before, A feeling that you feel, that you feel you want to feel, A feeling that you'll feel for evermore. 23.7.49 Best Wishes from Molly Molly and I have been friends for over 60 years. We shared our first boy-friend when we were six years old. Then he went off to Oz. Where are you John Walker? Norah in Hampshire |
