Ros, Very sorry for your loss and hope you will feel a little better every day. Like others have said, think about what you offered Macavity. You offered him a nice home and a chance for a happy, contented life. Not all cats are as lucky as that. Crista

Dear Ros I am so sorry to hear about your sad loss. As you say, pets bring us so much pleasure but also so much pain. You should feel free to grieve, after all it's just like losing a much loved family member. We lost one of our beloved cats with heart failure in 1998. could only take solace in the fact that he didn't suffer and would not have known much about it. It still leaves a hole though, which obviously does take time to get over. Be patient with yourself, and remeber the love and kindness that he had from you. There is a little piece called Rainbow Bridge on the net, in various sites, I think it's a little lift for those who have lost pets. You may have seen it, if not and you are up to it just type Rainbow Bridge into Google search and you'll find some especially for cats. Take care Lynda

Dear Ros, I am so sorry to learn about your friend Macavity. You ask why do we give our hearts to a pet only to have it broken when we lose them. Ros, no human is ever going to come close to loving us so unconditionally no matter how hard they try. Its unique this bond between owner and pet, once experienced its never forgotten. No spoken dialogue between human and animal , just an expression and intelligence in their eyes, as they communicate all. That is why we give our hearts so freely Ros, and though your heart is breaking now, You do not regret that you gave it so freely to Macavity. God bless. terri xx

So sorry Ros that Macavity has left you but remember only in body not in spirit. I suffer with every one of my dogs, when they are ill and when their time has come, but I cant imagine life without them, they are so loyal and faithful, true friends, as I'm sure Macavity was to you. I have photos of all my dogs, I have just decided to make an album for them on my PC

Ros, So sorry to read about Macavity. I have buried too many animals not to feel the pain of others. As to your question I wish that I could answer it. I could not imagine a world without animals that give you their unconditional love and devotion. regards Lindy

Oh Ros, I lost 3 in 9 months (1 on Xmas day) 2 years ago and remember how heartbreaking it was. But stupid us, We've only just picked up 2 more Rescue cats as our house was empty without them..... My heart goes out to you babe, and hope the memories are enough to keep you smiling when you think of Macavity.

Ros, Sorry to hear about Macavity, but you can console youself with the fact that in the last 5 years of his life with you, his life was full of love. It sounds harsh, but it sounds like he died suddenly, so didn't suffer. I look at Sophie (aka po-face!) stretched on the sofa and me, in front of the fire and wonder how she coped when she was forced to live outside by her previous owners (neighbours of mine), then spent 2 years as a 'stray' after they had moved away and abandoned her. She eventually found her way into my garden and moved in despite the two dogs (my daughter's) and 3 other cats (one mine, two belonging to a friend) that I had at the time. the dogs have moved on, the cats have gone, my old ginger tom was put down at 18. I have had Po for 8 years now, she is 14, throws up when she eats too fast, and lacerates my thighs trying to get on my lap while I'm at the computer - never very agile! The vomit can be cleaned up, the lacerations will (eventually) heal, and when she goes, I know, like you should Ros, that I have done my best for her.

Ros. so sorry to read about your loss, it brings back the memory of my own Cat which I put to sleep last year," Whiskey"a female black and white cat, was my constant companion, for 18 years, and travelled everywhere with me, even on international flights. I wouldnt leave her behind. I wont be getting a replacement. Bill

Hello Ros, so sorry to hear about McCavity - I know how you feel. I lost my little Sunshine aged 19 years some time back, and at the end I really felt like I had let her down after all the love and companionship she gave me. It did take some time, but now when I think of her I only really remember the lovely parts of our relationship, her wonderful nature and her funny little ways. I really do feel blessed to have known and loved her and enjoyed her company. Your cat was obviously much loved and appreciated, so take comfort from that and the knowledge that you did the very best you could have for McCavity throughout his life. Jacqui

So sorry about Macavity. Its the saddest thing when you lose a beloved cat. I've lost quite a few of my own through old age and illness. I work for a national rescue charity and we've lost a few that we just couldn't save. Remember, if you hadn't taken him in and looked after him he might not have had as many happy years with people who loved him, there are many who won't get that chance. The sadness will fade given time and you'll remember the happy times you spent together. Take care.

Hi Ros So, so sorry to hear about Macavity (what a lovely name),the thing with animals is they can't tell us when they are feeling ill or hurting. Sadly we lost our beloved Smudge this morning, she was put to sleep at 11am,she would have been 19 next month - such a gentle, sweet little lady. But atleast they and you/l know that we cared for them and gave them all they needed in life.l was feeling so guilty watching her go to sleep purring, but l know it was the right thing to do. God bless Macavity and Smudge xx Jude x

Our cats and dogs are part of our family, and are always there for us like a friend, and we miss them so much when they are no longer around the house. Take care, Kathy x

At 4.15 this afternoon we lost our beloved cat Macavity. We were not really sure how old he was as he was a rescue cat, but we had him for 5 and a half years and he was a fantastic character. The vet thinks he had a brain heamorrage as it was so sudden and he wasn't ill. He was more than just a cat, he was our friend and playmate and now I can't believe he's gone and I can't tell him off for getting muddy pawprints on the furniture and hiding when he is supposed to be going out for the night. Why do we have pets when they break our hearts when they die?
