Hazel Report 10 Mar 2004 14:13

has anyone any idea how I can find out about childrens homes in 1939 .Ive a relation who was put into one at 18 months and taken home at nearly 4 ,never told why .As it was before war started and other children stayed at home with her mum and dad it wasnt the reason .She thinks there is a connection with Kent and a Lord Jowitt who was lord Chancellor at that time .Ive found that he Jowitt ,was somehow connected with deaf children but as she doesnt think that she had a problem with her hearing thats that. Any help would be lovely and perhaps put her mind at rest after all these years .

Hazel- cannot help you with the specific home your relative was sent to, but I have a similar problem. My aunt and her siblings were placed in a childrens home here in Nottingham in 1934 and stayed there until they left aged 15. I know the name of the home and who administered it, and have written to Social Services (who told me they didnt have the records but these were held at the local Records Office, and had passed the enquiry to them). The Records Office have written and said they have never had the records and had passed the enquiry back to Social Services, who would contact me. That was back in October, and so far nothing. I cannot believe that there are no records in existence covering the lives of so many young children and adults (many of whom are still alive, and who (like my aunt) would like to know the reasons why they were placed in care). Frustrating isn't it? Jacqui
