Am I the only person fed up with the 1901 on-line website? You pay, you request an image- I have never yet received one even though I have Adobe Acrobat. I have emailed them in complaint but so far had no reply. I get charged 75p for the privilege and then end up having 25p left over each time that I can't use without renewing. I don't have so many lookups to do that I can keep renewing so I keep losing the money. I know Ancestry seems expensive but over a year I'm beginning to think it will save me money. I'm cross! |

Helen - The minimum charge is £5.00 but if you wait till you have perhaps 7 'looks' @ 75p each = £5.25 - put in a maximum spend amount of £10.00 do your look ups and log off and you will only be charged the £5.25. 8 looks = £6.00. 9 looks £.6.75 etc. Hope you can understand that.... S. |

helen you could buy a voucher from main library. I buy £5 at a time and you are allowed to carry over unsed credit. Also they last for 6 mths not 48 hrs Shelli |

Shelli, That's a good tip, thank-you. I'll try that in future. Karen, sounds like your problems are the same as mine. I still haven't had the courtesy of a reply from them. Cheers! |

At the risk of sounding a complete idiot, which one do you choose to download an image - PDF, Tiff or Applet? I think this is where I got stuck last time. Kathy |

Dear Helen, and all, I have been on the 1901 site, and struggled a bit. I beleive a £5 voucher has to be used within 48 hours,as I had about £2 odd left on mine. When I went back with only about 20 minutes to deadline,by the time I had sorted my details etc,I was not quick enough, and my account had emptied. I sent for the census print out,my details were on the bottom of a page, and carried over to the next page. They sent it very quickly. one page was correct for Lancs. but the other was for London.I emailed them twice, but got the right page shortly afterwards, all in about 10 days altogether.so that was not bad,but disappointing when you are looking forward to the postman coming. I think the vouchers last six months if you dont use them. You cant carry over an amount after the 48 hours. So it pays to have all your details and lookups ready before you start. It is a "live and learn" lesson. Best Wishes Margaret. |

MArgaret sorry to disagree but the vouchers are valid for six mths from time of first use, i only use vouchers. It's only the credit card which has to be used withn 48hrs. I always have to resume a session for my vouchers, so p'hap s that what you did wrong shelli |

Hi everyone, I have had a reply today from 1901 so if anyone is interested let me know and I'll email it to you. Can't say it's solved all my woes, in fact I'm going to contact them again about part of it, but I'm going to try what they suggest. Cheers Helen |

Dear Shelley,Thanks for your reply. I have re-read the instructions about using vouchers, they are confusing.(it is not hard to confuse me) I think what I didnt do was "log out" to close the session, which means it closes automatically after 48 hours. Thanks for putting me straight on that,it will save me getting all flustered ,as I did when I thought it was a race against time. Gratefully. Margaret. |
