A couple of years ago my friend was getting married and I was a bridesmaid. As we both look like a couple of milk bottles normally, we decided to do our own survey of DIY fake tans to see if they were any good. Our favourites were by Clarins and L'Oreal. Both of them were a gel formula and you didn't have to moisturise first (just a good exfoliation especially elbows, knees and ankle area). They both dry reasonably quickly too. The Clarins one was about £14.50 and the L'oreal one was on offer at about £7.99. I got about 5 -6 head to toe tans out of each. The Body Shop sell a mitt you can put on to apply it so your palms don't turn brown! It will look best if you give it 2 coats. And don't forget once you've applied it, don't scrub your body in the shower and just pat yourself dry or it will come off. Jeanette

Tis a good one isn't it Terri. Very difficult to make a complete streaky mess.

St tropez is fantastic, it's quite expensive and it might take you a couple of go's to get the hang of it but I thik it's definately the best one out there. Also most good beauticians will do St Tropez, i'd recommend having the spray done. It's £35 but you get 2 applications (well you should do unless they're trying to con you!) and it lasts quite a while and looks fab, No streaks or anything also it dry's pretty much instantaneously so you don't have to hang around! Another good one is called Ecotan and you spray it on and rub it in and you go amaxingly brown! It's slightly cheaper than St Tropez too! Amy x

I always have it done at a little local salon, St Tropez tan. No messing , no fussing, someone else does all the hard work, I just lay there and we gossip!! Super way to spend an hour! Steph

What about using a sunbed, just pretend you are lieing on a beach, but without getting sand everywhere. I have one once aweek, just to make me look healthier, and I know its not healthy but makes me feel better!

I like Clinique - they do it in 'fair' which is great if you just want a healthy glow. It doesn't have that strange smell to it either, and you don't end up looking like David Dickinson :)

Oh this is such a sorepoint in my house just now! 17yr old daughter put on Ambre Solaire spray on self tan bronzer yesterday and what a mess she has made of her legs. Honestly, she's got more stripes than a tiger! She exfolliated and moisturised before hand so don't know what went wrong. She's been scrubbing ever since and still just as bad. Anyone any tips on how to get it off. Someone suggested lemon juice. HELP!!!

Christine - I've heard that hair removing cream (such as immac) is good for removing fake tan - I've not tried it though - I've also seen a tip on the net that you can make up an exfoliator of olive oil and salt - it's maybe worth a try.

Thanks Lisa, you know what like they are at that age. All I've heard is "her whole weekend is ruined" So will give anything a try.
