Hi, 2 messages in 1 night, but I have to share this one. My sister just brought over some old photos of our grandparents. they were tiny little ones in guilded holders that had seen better days. i asked if she knew when they had been taken as the photos were obviously pretty old and I was guessing at about 1910. I asked if my sister had ever had the photos out of the holders as the date might be written on the back. anyway she hadn't so we took the photos out and there inside of grans photo was a second photo of an older woman who I think was my greatgrandmother the photo will need special treatment to make it come to life but what a find. In the back of grandad's photo there had also been a second photo but unfortunately the back of the holder had rusted and the photo was ruined beyond repair. Never-the-less I'm happy with the find we made so have a look at the back of any photos you have in lockets etc. xx Dave |

Dave, that's great, you must be thrilled. Before you consign the ruined photo to the bin, have you thought about taking it to a specialist photo shop to see if they can salvage anything from it? Mandy :) |

Hi, thanks for the replies. Mandy, I'm afraid the corrosion has eaten away most of the photo so it's gone forever. Just a little footnote about the (perhaps) downside of family photos. I have one treasured photo of a young man standing outside a shop with the family name over the door. The shop is a second hand furniture restorers and outside is an horse and cart. It would seem that my rellies were one step up from rag tatters. xx Dave |

Could have been worse Dave. They could have been one step down from the rag tatters! I'm doing some transcribing for FreeCen - a piece from the 1861 for West Yorkshire. There's quite a few woollen waste dealers and rag dealers on there. A by-product of the weaving trade no doubt. Of course everyone would have needed rags in those days. No kitchen paper or Dettox floor cleaners for us housewives and no squeegies (sp?) for window cleaners in those days. Wonder if the horse in the photo's called Hercules! lol Jeanette |
