Hello Margaret, I stay five minutes from Newcraighall. My sister-in-law lives in one of the old miners cottages. The name Douglas is quite a famous name in Newcraighall. I don't know if your familiar with Bill Douglas the film maker, but he was born there and made a few films of his life growing up there. I beleive he died in the 90's. I don't know if you meant the name Hood you are researching was from there also, but my s-i-l did have a neighbour several years ago called George Hood. He has since died, but he lived all his life in the village too. There is a web sit with details of the Hood family tree on it. http://www.hoodfamily.info/MainReport/DHd002M1.html I think Newcraighall came under Liberton parish back then There is also another site giving all the history of Newcraighall which is http://uk.geocities.*com/craigmillararchive/craigmillararchives.html I hope this is useful and if I can find anything else out for you email me and I'll certainly try. best wishes Christine |

hello, and thanks for all your help. YES I am the cousin of Bill Douglas, and I have been to Australia to visit my cousin Helen Douglas half sister to Bill.I know everything about Newgraighall as both my grandparents lived there. My mother was adopted in to the Douglas Family, and Married Peter Henry.I am trying to find out as much as I can about the family Hood, and Niven . My mothers paternal mother had her in 1918 in the hospice up the High Street in Edinburgh. She tracked her down , but didn't want anything to do with her.She was married to a Niven, and her maiden name was Hood. There is NO connection to the Hoods of Newcraighall. My mother god bless her is now 86 and has bad alzheimers.I am writing a story, about my mother and her life, and I could do with a bit of info re- the hospice, and the way people were adopted at that time. I know my mother was adopted for the money it brought in.I am also looking in to the Thomson family who lived in cockenzie. I know that there are a lot in that area, but every little helps. Thankyou in adavance, Alison [Margaret]x |
