From Yorkshire Evening Press Saturday March 28th 1953 WEDDING RUSH TO BEAT THE TAX MAN Churches & register offives throughout the country were busy toda.The reason for all the rush is that couples married on or before April 5th -the end of the financial year- can claim full income tax marriage allowance for the current year Mr D W L Ake , Superintendent Registrar told the Evening Press that 11 couples were married at York Register Office.The average for a Saturday is 5 and from 8.30.a.m. today couples were married at thge rate of one every 15 minutes.

Yes, it happened. Tom and I married on 26th March 1955 for the same reason. I think we got 26 shillings tax back. £1.30p Norah

Hello Jan, Don't know about beating the tax year, but when Paula and I got married in March 2001, we did it pronto about two weeks before I was due to retire early from the NHS because of reorganisation and all the redundancy complications. I realised, when I read through the small print of the NHS pension scheme, that my widow (in due course - lol!) would not be entitled to a full widow's pension unless we were already married at the time of my retirement. As I'd coughed up for over 30 years to the pension fund, that was too important a matter to screw up, so we arranged a fast track, and only invited 5 guests to our wedding! Happy days, Philip
