If your other half brought home a live chicken for you to cook for dinner, could you kill it? No, I couldn't. I think I'd let it go again. I suppose not being brought up in the countryside makes a difference. Sylvia

Interestingly my husband's parents had friends, one of whom was a pathologist. He was ok with corpses, but his wife had to carve the Sunday joint as it made him feel funny! I could kill something if I had to, but it would be hard. The thing about chickens is you'd also have to pluck them.

I watched a documentary last week about a Dutchman living in Russia and he killed one right before our very eyes. I had to look away from the screen. Even with its head off it started running around - oogh!! Sylvia

Another queer thing is eating raw meat or fish. The Japanese do - Sushi. The Dutch eat raw herrings. It took me 20 plus years before I could attempt to eat one. Even now it has to be a very small one. The Italians eat Carpaccio - raw meat.

I was bought up in the country and would often go "bush beating" with the local shoot, and carry the pheasants home, but i personally could never kill one. My Dad would often kill a pig for a person in the village, but couldn't his own, he had to sell them!! My sister lives in holland, and loves raw fish.

Rebecca, does your sister live near the sea? On the subject of killing pigs. When I lived in Nigeria, we would buy a pig and have it killed, sharing the meat with other residents on our compound. My children actually stood and watched the pig being killed, which is something I couldn't do. Well this time it was my turn to cut up the meat and weigh it out for everybody. Have you ever tried cutting up loads of warm meat that you had seen running around an hour before. Absolutely revolting! Sylvia
