I have persuaded my other half to take some time off work and go on holiday. We're hoping to get a last minute cancellation. He fancies the Canary Islands but as we have never been there I don't know which island would be the best. We don't like noisy resorts but we don't like to be out in the sticks either. Any members out there been to the Canaries and can give us some advice? Jeanette x

been to Lanzarote. it was nice, very clean , not a lot to do but sit and relax. we went to Puerto del Carmen. was told that Fuerteventura was nice for couples and young families. don't know if this still applies. have a nice time wherever you get to.

We go regularly to both Tenerife and Lanzarote (we are in our 60s). Favourite is Lanzarote - Costa Teguise, plenty of restaurants, nightclubs if you want them at Puerto Del carmen. Lanzarote is more unspoilt, not pretty but some of the volcanic scenery is awesome. Can be quite windy, although it is a warm wind most of the time. swimming pools seem quite cold as a rule, sea in september/October fairly warm. Tenerife - much busier, mad drivers. Puerto De La Cruz is lovely if you don't mind a half hour drive from the airport as it is in the North of the Island. No beach to speak of here though just a lido, much greener than the south of the Island. We like Los Christianos but not so much Las Americas which is for the young set (more loud bars and nightclubs, They run into one another. Golf Sur is quieter and on the bus route to Los Christianos, there is a shopping centre here with shops but some of the places are a fair walk awaay - possible if you are fit but a bit scary after dark because not many street lights. OK if you have a car. taxi costs 20 euros from the airport to Golf Sur. Some places have coach transfer. swimming pools warmer Food on both islands is good - English, spanish,Chinese, italian, Mexican - quite varied. Tenerife tends to be warmer than Lanzarote although lanzarote has less rain. don't know much about feurteventura except it has the same winds as Lanzarote and has some good beaches. Wine quite cheap on both Islands -Spanish and Canarian. Ann Glos

Jeanette, Would def. recommend Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife and not just because my sister lives there!! By the way there are now two newly created beaches there - black sand of course but lovely none the less and although it's quite a journey from the airport it's much nearer to the other sites e.g. Santa Cruz the capital, Icod - which has the Dragon Tree and Orotava which is a beautiful town and the old capital. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, shops etc. without the yobs. I have been at least once a year for the last 14 years and still enjoy it there. Wherever you decide on - have a great time! Anywhere has got to beat the dismal weather we're having here this Summer. Emma x

Cheers Bill! lol Well, I've now gone from being a bit worried about the Canaries (I love Greece) to being spoilt for choice. You all sound as though you've had a great time which ever island you've been too. I can now book my holiday with confidence. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Jeanette x

Husband & I went to Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, back in the late 1980s. It was lovely, but we went in May expecting good weather. It was quite mild, but I caught a cold. On the third day I went out onto our balcony and was astounded to see Mount Teide - a volcano. It had been shrouded in cloud for the first 2 days and I had no idea! we went on an excursion there - amazing sci-fi landscape caused by volcanic eruptions. Food very good and we had lovely paella and patatas arrugadas (spuds in garlic). Also some fantastic rose wine the name of which I have forgotten. Helen
