And I remember the sweet tobacco, sweet cigarettes, lemonade sherbert with lollipops in (can't remember the name but it came in a small square pack), plus sherbert fountains with the liquorice sticks in, liquorice root (can still get it and I have some now to gnaw on when I get the muchies), chocolate shapes - cars, saws, hammers etc, white sugar mice, sherbert lemons, sherbert bon bons in various flavours, sherbert pips (pink and white) that we used to send one small kid out to buy by the quarter in primary school lunchbreaks, jubblies, space rocket ice creams, fabs (still around but not the same), haunted house ice lollies, funny feet ice creams, Smiths savoury vinegar crisps, and "bones" - also savoury vinegar bone shaped crisps but can't remember the make, pineapple chunks - took the roof of your mouth off if you ate too many, cola chunks (ditto)...... Spangles, space dust, mojos, 1/2p sherbet flying saucers, jars of jam with free golliwog badges to save up for (I had no idea of the connotations then), cereal boxes with poppit toys/plastic racing car kits inside, tins of sweetheart dessert which had strawberries in and you had to add milk to dilute it - our Sunday treat when we were kids, jamboree bags, Misty and Jackie magazines...... Barry, You still buy boxes of broken biscuits sometimes in 'Iceland'. Christina, I'm sure I've seen the sugar mice not so long ago. It was one of the things always found at the bottom of our childrens' Christmas stockings. What about Tiger Nuts are they still about? I haven't seen any in years. What was their real name. We bought them in a sweet shop but they were shrivelled up nuts of some sort. |

As some of you know, I am a Wasps Rugby Club fan and they have an unofficial fan site called [can't think why!!] Drunken Wasps. As the season has ended, there isn't much rugby to chat about, so the message board has been full of reminiscences and AQUA MANDA got all the female contingent going - it must have sold in gallons. There was also AQUA CITRA. Owbridges cough mixture. Bazooka bubble gum with free Beatles photos! Princess Diana magazine with Marina on the back cover! |

My Nan had a mangle to squeeze the water out of the washing. It was a big cast iron thing that stood out in the yard. I used to love turning the big wheel. Jo. |

Who remembers dried apple rings ? in the early 40s my Mum used them (soaked ) to make apple pies. Household dried milk, tasty when it went hard and you could chew the lumps ! We used to buy "Fennings teething powders for babies (in folded papers ) and eat them like sherbet (our mothers didn't know ). also a ha'penny oxo from the bottom shop and lick them , yuk !!! Sweet ration was 2ozs per week at one time then increased to 4ozs .......bad enough but if you didn't have the money it was tooooo bad !!!! United in memories..........see ya Joyce |

What about Bri-nylon shirts, or nighties and sheets. Used to be terrified of turning in bed at night, the sparks would fly! Crimpelene is another material you don't see now. Of course they'd all be washed in OMO soap powder, after being scrubbed on the wash board and put through the mangle. Gawd I sound ancient, only 42..honest. Christine |
