Gerri I remember that we had a bottle of smelling salts 'for when you come over faint'. If I remember correctly it was a brown bottle, almost circular faced but narrow base. It certainly made you wake up if you took a smell of it!

I really enjoyed reading through the memories of those that have written on this thread. I remember my mother having one of those ST belts and a gridle plus all the Avon stuff, I used to be given the sample lipsicks. (she'll hate me for mentioning the ST belt, but she is amazed as to how much I can remember from when I was younger anyway). Kim from Sandhurst, 'Touch Tapestry', I loved doing those, got me started on the real thing. 'Fuzzy Felts', my mum still has ours in a cupcoard in her bedroom along with loads of our old toys and board games. My husband says that you can't get Black Currant and Liqorice sweets llike they used to make them, he used to be given liqorice root most days as he suffered with bad bronchitus when he was a young lad, now smokes like a trooper. Green shiled stamps, bought my first dinner set with those and I still have my egg chicken that I bought. Camp Coffee, this was a treat that I had on a friday night after we did Nannie's shopping, made with hot milk. Jack and Jill comic - my fav. Famous Five books, sure you can still buy them but I loved them. Strawberry aero, this one lovely, my mum used to buy me one on Fridays when we did the weekly shop. Does anyone remember their Mum having a pot of smelling salts? Deffinately going to try the web site out. GREAT

How about 'Beano' and 'Dandy' comics! Has anyone seen the gizmo for darning socks which was like a round wooden disc about 2' across with a 'weaving loom' that attached to it with a rubber band. You pressed first one side and then the other after you had passed the needle through. I would love to get one again. Also if you google for 'pink sugar mice' you will find places that have all the old sweets. I have just ordered pink sugar mice for my daughter - can't wait for them to come from Devon as there will be a few missing before she gets hers. Just hope that customs doesn't confiscate them!

Can anyone remember Rosebud sweets, tiny little pink and white hardboiled ones, and cough candy? What about the Petticoat magazine where you sent for a basic pattern made of sort of j cloth material and then adapted each time you used it to make different styles of dresses, tops etc. I still have mine somewhere in my work box. I recently saw some Imprevu talc in an old lady's bathroom cupboard when I was helping her have a clear out, and some Manyana too. What about those Vaseline? hair shampoo sachets that held a powder that had to be mixed with water before using. And who was dosed up with /Cod liver oil and malt, or Virol, and good old California Syrup of Figs every Friday evening regardless of how you had performed all week? I think that stuff might still be available. By the way, I was trying to find out about the Ginger beer plants we used to pass on to all and sundry and have found a recipe so if anyone wants to try and start one up again, please ask and I'll write out the recipe. Happy days.

I read all the Mallory Towers books. Crickey wouldn't they seem dated now. I have two boxes of annuals still under my bed. Do you remember that tooth stuff you got in a tin. It was like a block and you had to wet the toothbrush and mix it onto it. Used to like that. Think they had red or blue.

Louise Report 9 Apr 2005 21:33

I miss the innocence of 'Twinkle' and the excitement of trying on a free plastic nurses apron when I was five. I've got a 1962 copy of 'June' annual that REALLY shows the difference between the girls of then and now. Louise

Do any of you remember the GIRL, and theGIRLS CRYSTAL, before they became strip comics? I just adored them, and had them every week. then they were changed and became comics, all the stories were lost, and it lost all it magic.........to me anyway. I also remember the AVON childrens perfumed talc, etc. I used to buy them for my girls for their stockings at Christmas. Was it PEACHES........or something like that? Deanna

Lisa, i am fairly sure that Avon's Occur which was in a black pot had a swan on it ; i think they still sell this fragrance but in a different package, it would be worth asking for a sample sniff, good luck.
