If you sell your car privately or even to a dealer, make sure you send the tear off strip at the bottom of the registration document to the DVLA immediately...................... I spoke today to a man who sold his car privately last Friday......... The car was involved in an accident on Monday and the police got a garage to come and tow it away........ The driver had run away from the scene of the accident without giving any details......... The original owner had not yet informed the DVLA of the change of ownership, and so legally he is still the owner of the car and as such is liable for the cost of having his car removed by the garage and stored and possibly even be prosecuted for leaving the scene of an accident.................Be warned............The man is getting legal advice but the outlook is not very hopeful..................... Just to add to this warning - (as I used to work for the Kent Magistrates Courts Service), you can also be prosecuted and fined a 3 figure sum, for not informing the DVLA of a change of ownership!!! so if you do sell your car make sure you inform them immediately!
