I have just been on the 1881 census (LDS site) looking at Limpenhoe, where my gt grandparents lived. I was looking at next and previous households to get an idea of how large a place it was. There were 46 households, including a grand house with servants, 2 grocer's shops and of course a pub. Most of the inhabitants were labourers/farm workers and the address is just Limpenhoe. But one chap, a drover, had as his dwelling "A Shed, Limpenhoe". Doesn't sound like a des res to me, more in need of a makeover! |

I saw someone on 1891 listed as 'a tramp, sleeping in a hayloft' -I am amazed that the enumerator bothered to check if someone was living there in the first place!!! |

In the parish records of Seaton Carew Hartlepool for the 1800s there is the death of a child recorded and the residence is given as " a hut on the beach". I thought it was so sad it made me cry! |

Hi Helen I have some rellies up in Orkney whos address on the census is Root of Tree, I really hope this was the name of their house rather than they actually lived under a tree. Christine |
