Hi all, Well a bit of a scrappy day, finished off the last bits and bobs of ironing, tidied up my hobby room a little as there was no room for me to sit down any more. This evening we've had our delightful granddaughter here for dinner. The weather has been a mixture of rain and sun, but I didn't have to go out so it didn't matter. I have now been presented with a huge bag of apples, so these will have to be processed for the freezer. Am feeling rather tired now as I missed my little nap after dinner, but Linda comes here at 7.00 pm and we have no time for a nap any more; We usually eat at 5.00 then have time for a nap before the evening begins. See you all tomorrow. Sylvia xxx

Hi everyone Brr you say Sylvia - NZ is heading into summer but we have had sudden change in the weather heavy rain, slips and flooding in parts of the country. In Auckland two properties a teetering on the cliff and could fall into the sea. As mentioned a few days ago I had turned the ventilation system from winter to summer, well with the weather change I have now reversed it back. It seems this weather comes on when the clocks go forward. Craig is on the mend, had blood tests and was told he was getting better but to be careful. John

I am supposed to be getting organised to do some proper searching on certain days then have a half hour each evening to catch up on emails and messages !!!! we will see how it goes. Glad you are feeling better Sylvia,we all need to wind down at times,I am hoping by getting more organised I will not have to catch up so much and therefore have more time nd eventually less tired. Its been more wintery than autumn over here, and the clocks change in three weeks .!! See you all tomorrow,Brenda

Hi everyone, Lovely to hear that you had a relaxing holiday Brenda. It does one good to be able to unwind once a year at least. Me, I think I am feeling a bit better. At least I didn't fall asleep in the middle of the afternoon and my mouth is not so swollen or painful as it has been. I do feel awful at having to say 'I am tired' when I know I haven't done much, but am afraid that has been the case lately. We have real Autumn weather here with high winds, even tornados in the south, and rain, thunder, lightning etc.etc. Yes, I really think summer has gone. I hope Fred is enjoying himself and has not blown away. Sylvia xxx

We swam in the pool most afternoons after having a good walk, had great walks after dinner and spent the evening chatting and having a few drinks with our friends. We did not walk as much as we normally do due to the heat and the fact that they are doing a lot of improvements to the walkways and a big chunk was closed.John and two of the other chaps went for a game of golf, which they enjoyed ,but would not repeat due to the heat. Morning peeps. Old Fred is getting geared up for tomorrow and the trip up up north wahey lol,off to recharge the batteries and terrify the local fishies hee hee. I was up at six ,to clean my fishes out ,all five of them ,and then got them fed, cleaned the car inside and out, leaving only the tyres ,oil ,and water to check this evening . When i come back i should be within sight of the end to this temporary jog, seeing as bro in law put the last sicknote in Friday, stating that he can return to work in eight weeks . When i come back ,i will arrange for a builder to come out and repoint the gable end of the ghouse seeing as the rest of the brickwork is fine. I am beyond clambering up ladders and scaffolding now although at one time i was doing it everyday,is'e gettin' old ,i is',waaaah ,Mummmmy,it ain't fair, lol. Mary's chalet is looking very forlorn with all the plants gone ,and all the seed trays empty, but it's all swept out and ready for the geranium guttings and seeds to go in.all planed and ready to go,my greenhouse gets used all year round. I now have three pots of rose cuttings [four to a pot] so i should'nt have to bur any roses at all to finish the planting off [hopefully] I will have a treat when i get back too ,in that the corn will be ready,i can taste them already, hot out of the mic'[done in a steamer], with lashings of butter [slurp],the son is welcome to some Kale ,Beetroot, and Tomatoes ,but the corn is mine all mine, hee hee ,seeing as Liz hates it. Well,i am off now peeps ,still loads of packing to do. See you all next week, take care all,Fred.

Hello everyone October already - the weather is getting warmer so much so that this morning I turned the ventilation system from winter to summer. Our son, Craig still lives on Auckland's North Shore is not well at the moment as he has glandular fever - a bit of worry that we are not living closer. Around 9pm on Saturday had a phone call asking Gayle and I to sing in the music team at church on Sunday as one those down was in hospital. I watch a film on TV and advanced the lounge clock an hour for daylight saving. We had a surprise at church this morning when two dear friends from where were living came to the service. One of them has family living in the district. This is the second time that we have friends from our old church visit here and both occasions Gayle and I were in the music team. If you never know who will turn up next. Brenda, hope you had great two weeks away. John

Hello everyone, Welcome home Brenda, it's horrible when you have to suffer such a long delay at the end of your holiday. Hope you catch up on your sleep tonight. It is raining hard at the moment, been very dull for a couple of days with some showers but also periods of heavy rain and a thunderstorm in the early hours. Woke to find a river flowing down the road, soon cleared though. They are still telling us that we haven't had enough rain yet and the hosepipe ban will remain probably through the winter - don't actually see the need for a hosepipe at the moment as the garden is getting very well watered. I love beetroot served hot with a white sauce but like the sound of Sylvia's recipe so will give that a try soon. My g.daughter used to help peel the beets but always wore plastic gloves because she didn't like her fingers going all red. Hope your conservatory gets finished soon John, it will be worth the wait though especially as you have the summer to look forward to. Dorothy, sounds as though you and your friend had a lovely time during her visit to you. It must be exciting waiting for your visit to Bury next year - lots of memories to revisit and I expect you will find many things have changed. Fred, take it easy for a while you have had a long spell of working on top of all the other things you do. Mavis, nothing quite like picking strawberries you've grown yourself. Do you have a big garden? I've just bought a few more plants to try to keep a bit of colour in the garden through the winter. Unfortunately, whilst I was away for two weeks, my pot plants were not watered and now need to be replanted. I have a drain pipe outside my kitchen window and have pots fastened to it so that I have something to look at when I'm washing up. I do hope your friend recovers from the infection, so sad when this happens after coming through the operation. Must go to bed as my eyes are tired. Hope I haven't missed anyone. God bless Love Kathleen

Hello again. Hope your 'fungus' clears up soon for you Sylvia. Like you I have never heard of it. Is it painful? Since living in NZ Dorothy I miss Marks & Sparks!! What good quality their goods are. What a lovely 60th to go 'home' especially with the airmiles! We usually have hot beetroot with a white sauce - yummy. Goes well with cold meat or fish. But I like pickles beet too. Have been busy in the garden today - quite sun burnt. Good job I put sun block on my face. Need to buy a few more plants - petunias and busy lizzies. Good old faithfulls for a splash of colour. Our roses are well in bud - as soon as they open I will take some photo's. Di - how is the Kayak doing? Must be almost ready to 'launch'. My daughter and family are in the South Island for 6 days. My eldest grandson who is in the Army and stationed in Christchurch was 19 in August and he is having 5 days leave to stay with them. Yesterday they went to Mount Hutt to do a little skiing. Or try is more like it! Had our Guess Who's Coming to Dinner last night. We were guests this time. Had a great time. Food was good and the wine was pretty good too! Tomorrow will be a lazy day (I hope) the clocks go forward tonight so will lose 1 hour in bed. I will go to Church at 10 a.m. Pip prefers not to go but is more than happy for me to go. Will then come home have lunch and sit in the garden and read. Off to bed now - love to everyone. Mavis NZ

Hi everyone, Well Annemie and I went to the market this morning, not really wanting to buy on the market, but the weather was good so it's nice to get out. We finished off having coffee in our favourite haunt where the smell of delicious cakes is very tempting. My doctor phoned me this afternoon to tell me the results from the swabs they took from my mouth and which had been to the lab. Well apparently I have fungus growing in my mouth. Never heard of it, but I have it. I now have a bottle of liquid to swill in my mouth every day. I have already tried two other ones, so hope this works. My granddaughter has just mailed me that she is coming to eat here on Wednesday. I do hope I feel better by then. Will keep this short. Sylvia xxx

hi brenda and one ans all this is dorothy from canada, my friend from bury lancs has been with me for the past three weeks and it has been lovely to have her here we have been all over the place, out for dinner at friends and at my family we have eaten far too much. she leaves on saturday to return to bury and I shall miss her very much, but will see her next year when I come home it will be my birthday treat (65) to myself, but the other night my son told me not to book anything as he will perhaps send me on his airmiles, very nice I thought, he had wanted to give me a party on my 60th but I don't care for that so I suppose he know it is no use offering a party again next year so the airmiles would be a great gift, think of all the money I could spend in marks and sparks and on bury market plus the book stores anyway I hope that brenda has had a good holiday bye for now dorothy

Hi everyone We have now had the same vinyl put in the toilet as the bathroom as they are next door to each other - looks much better now. Still waiting for the conservatory to be finished. Daylight saving rolls around on Sunday with clocks going forward for the spring/summer period - it seems earlier this year too. Gayle and I will flying to Wellington in two weeks for a church conference and staying in an apartment. Do any of you find those adverts that appear at the top of GR and on the left side a bit off-putting - so easy to be accidentally clicked on too. Have anyone tried roasted beetroot, I thing my Mum use to cook it. I am still thinking about my GR membership that's up for renewal in October. Till next time, take care. John

Hi Fred, We always eat our beetroots hot as a vegetable. First cook the beets, then slice or grate them and re-heat them with a grated onion, few cloves, pepper and salt, 2 teaspoons sugar, 2 tablespoons vinegar and some thickening, such as sago or potatoe flour. I usually eat them with fish or some fatty pork slices of meat. Well thank goodness the weather is still sunny and dry as I had to go back to the supermarket and demand the money they 'stole' from me yesterday. No problem, so here I am a happy bunny. Isn't it quiet on this thread? Now must leave you lot, see you tomorrow Sylvia xxx
