Ramblin Rose Report 10 Mar 2005 10:11

I do hope that there is a resolution to this dreadful proposal. It is so shortsighted to cut medication because of cost. There has obviously been little thought for the long term suffering ,not only of the patients, but also of those who care for them. The knock on effect of this knee jerk reaction will be that those who are in the position of long time carers will themselves make more demands on the Health Service for medication themselves for HBP,HEART PROBLEMS,STRESS ASSOCIATED SKIN DISORDERS,ASTHMA-The list goes on and it will cost the Health Service far more. This is typical Crisis Management with no thought for th qulity of life built into the equasion -I speak from experience,my blood pressure, which had been sky high dropped dramatically when my very elderly mother died. I will certainly bend Jim's ear again-Rose

Thanks Christine, its such a cruel illness isnt it? My dad has it. He left us when i was 15 and I have not seen him since. I felt the need to talk to him, and when i found where he is I found that he would not be able to talk to me. I find it so very difficult to equate the big strong, handsome able man of my childhood with the man he must be today. So very sad. Please help me to keep this up on page one. Deanna

Hi Deanna, Saw your query to Peter re deleting- if you just delete a message, the thread does not go back down. I had already sent my comments to NICE but have just emailed my MP. Paul Stinchcombe. MY mother started signs of Alzheimers 3-4 yrs ago. It began very slowly with her repeating herself, often telling you the same thing several times in the same conversation. It was bizarre. At first we didn't realize how serious it was and even once or twice (heartless) thought it was funny. We know now that it wasn't or isn't funny.THat's why I had to add my support . Love Christine

Bren from Oldham Report 8 Mar 2005 23:00

Please read the Nice document and add your comments and send an e-mail to your MP Not just in support of Linda and Vic but for all the others who are going to be affected by the decision to stop treatment . As usual the main argument is cost effectiveness but in my estimation it costs more to put people into care than it does to keep someone reasonably stable and living within their own enviroment Bren

I am nudging this up for Linda with an appeal for anyone who can do something to please just spend a few minutes looking on the NICE website and filling in the comments. THese drugs can make such a difference. Dementia can affect anyone. My mother was always a real livewire, full of interests, walked, studied, travelled, did an Open University degree, worked as a teacher and now she has Alzheimers. she cannot remember anything much although sometimes her reasoning is surprisingly good. When I visited on Sunday she and my father had been looking at some of their plants, dad said some needed repotting, he showed one to mum. She said If it dies, I will kill it and laughed at her own joke. THis was a really good day for her, makes me feel better. Heaven knows what she would be like without Aricept. Probably in a home by now. PLease do all you can for Linda and her husband. This condition is no joke. LOve CHristine

Once again thank you for keeping this in view! So many of you are in the same situation and have e mailed me. As one of you said it is an illness for the forgotten. So many illnesses can be prevented or are self inflicted yet the help is there for them. This should be treated like any other complaint. Although not everyone responds to treatment most do if only in the short term. Life is so short anyway lets do all we can to help. Linda x I am away for a week now so I am really grateful to you all for the support.
