Ifd we don't put our real names into the site, how are we going to upload our Tree? It has to be linked to us. Although I see that Maz has only one name on here. All I'm asking for here is that we be honest with each other. Not prying, but trying to become friends who have a common interest in Family History.

Hi Mike, it does seem as though something like that has happened from another thread I read this evening. I believe that people should be honest enough to stand up and be counted. If we have an opinion we're entitled to it, whoever we are, but I don't see a need to be offensive which is apparently what has happened somewhere. I personally have no problem with displaying my name or membership number but I do take the point others have made about security, which is a big issue these days. Jan

I have had a good think on this..... What if we register our user name with GR? (no changing it) If you choose to use your real full name, thats up to you but I'd suggest you dont! Gerri

Good point Mike. If we we're going to have our names on display then this board would have to be a no go area for non members.

No Jim, that's been adequately demonstrated this evening without a doubt. It just does seem ridiculous that we have to start legislating for these idiots who don't have the courage to stand up and be counted. Jan :-)

In answer to Maz, As I said earlier originally when we sign on our proper names ARE on display. That is the way GR designed it.

Have no quams about that. The only reason that I changed my name was that all my friends call me Spud. In the end do you think that it will bother people who are out to cause bother if you know their real name?

Unknown Report 13 Mar 2005 23:55

Just one thing Jan, Seeing the membership number doesn't mean you know who it is. That's why I am suggesting the display of the real name. We can still use our fun names and change them as often as we like to fit in with the humour of the moment, but it will prevent people being malicious because they hope not to be recognised. Jim Weatherall (or is it?)

Maz I suppose you do have a point actually. Would it stop you from coming on here if your real name was available?

If the majority are in agreement I will ask them to look at the thread. That is why I put it up for discussion because although I often feel that I have had a bright idea, the rest of the World doesn't necessarily always agree!

I'd have no problem at all displaying either my name or my membership number, or both, GJ. It shouldn't be necessary though should it. There are loads of other sites where people use 'aliases' or 'funnies' like we do on here and I don't think it creates problems elsewhere. None that I am aware of anyway. Our membership numbers are available - I've recently found out - with the hovering cursor haha, although cos I'm such a techno-turkey I had to be told how to do it. Jan :-)
