Elaine The trouble causers aren't just on other sites, there's plenty on here too. It wouldn't necessarily stop non GR members from other sites knowing what is being said. All it takes is for a member here to copy and paste it and send it to the non member. And what's to stop the GR member from letting somebody post in their name as has happened at the weekend? What it will stop is non members gleaning personal information from us in order to steal our identities Jeanette

I have emailed GR and asked them to roll the eyeball over this Thread. I hope they will take your concerns seriously, and plan to improve Security on the Site. Jim

Good idea Jim Im sure Gr will mull over all the suggestions and take all things into consideration. Regardless of if it is possible to put them into practice or not. Elaine x

Hi Grampa Jim, I have emailed Genes today as well, I asked them to check this thread and I also put the same suggestions I always have to them. Hi Elaine I think it’s time Genes took the security here more seriously, they already had to stop everyone who used to read the boards posting on them too, that was a long time ago when kids started posting rubbish and abuse, I think the time has come to revaluate once again the viewing of the boards. If other websites can do it there is no reason why Genes cannot do it too, and the sooner the better. Pat x

as a paid member, i have now changed my name to the above. this is because, a member of my family(inlaw) who was not a member, could see everything i had written, by just browsing through the boards. i like to type to friends, whom are also paid members, have a laugh, chit chat, etc. surley GR could stop this if they wanted, yes view possible ancestors names , but not our boards.

Thanks for this thread Grampa, it's been really interesting reading it. I've never used my surname on the boards because when I joined the site, I was still in the midst of adoption stuff and have personal reasons for not wanting my maiden name (ie my parents' surname) brandished too publicly, especially as it's quite unusual. However, I don't mind having my married name on show if it would help with security issues. I also think that it should only be full paying members who can view the site - the same as it is on other websites. Also by only having paying members, they are easier to track down via their payment method. Mandy :)

I used my real name for a long time then I started to have telephone calls that I really didn't need. As I do not want to go ex-directory for several reasons, it seemed logical to refrain from using my surname. Bear in mind that if you publish your name here, I for one can easily get your address (and telephone number unless you are ex-directory) from my UK-Info Disc and there are thousands of less scrupulous people out there able to do the same.
