judes idea is quite good, as long as I don't have to read science Fiction (well, I might read some but not really my scene) But it is a good idea to widen the scope. As we want to get off the ground I suggest that we read the Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence or Sower and the Seed, whatever it is called, and then the first of the second books is A Child called It, plus whichever one we vote for from this last list of yours Mike. My vote is Snow falling on Cedars (mainly because I have it and want to read it). Ann glos

When do we need to vote by? Dee

Unknown Report 25 Apr 2005 19:05

Sorry l was eating my dinns:o(( To try and clarify my suggestion abit more. 3 catergories/subject Science Fiction - Classics - Mystery Murder,(or what ever) each cat/sub has 5 or ? book titles. We must all vote on all cat/sub, after voting we should have 3 books. We choose one. Each month the cat/subs can be changed - is that sounding more complicated??? lol Must say l won't actually go out and buy the chosen book, unless it is a £1 or 2 in charity:o))) l'll be back later, hubby hurt his back and is laying on the floor,he might be gasping for a cuppa!!!!!! lol jude sarf wales :o))

Why don't you put all the runners up on again and we can vote for the second book Ann Glos

Unknown Report 25 Apr 2005 18:12

Sounds good to me Jude Just to clarify though if you have bought or ordered a book we'll include it -- its teething problems! lol I want to be a complete coward now and say I was hoping the club would 'kick off' and we could read and review and then I wouldn't be involved anymore apart from reading! I'm sorry to those who are offended by the choice of 'A child Called It' but we cannot always turn a blind eye, sometimes whats unpleasant needs to be read? This is a Book Club you do not have to read if the book of the month offends you and I would rather you didn't take it personally? ok

Unknown Report 25 Apr 2005 18:05

How about a catergory section - catergories with approx 5 book titles in each .Then we can choose a catergory and a book!! Perhaps 3 catergories or it will get complicated. what do you all think?? jude sarf wales :o)))

Ann, All the others had 2 votes each except for Cloud Mountain Jane Austen Book Club Both with 1 vote. So you see the dilemma? That is what I can't work out what to do?? Merry Christmas is reviewed 23rd May -- so the next book is not until 23rd June review but as you said you need 2 on the go??

AnninGlos Report 25 Apr 2005 17:48

Mike, for those of us who don't want to read a child called it, or who have already read it, why don't you give us the next popular vote so we can read that instead, no reason why we can't be commenting on two books at once, especially as A child called it may be too upsetting for some to read. what will be the date for discussing the second book? Ann Glos

Deanna, No problem! I haven't started Merry Christmas myself yet as in the middle of a Robert Ludlum thriller! I'm one of these though who always has a book on the go and not everyone is like that I realise now. GReadies if you think this is the wrong way to do it please feel free to say so. I just wanted to start something we could all read and then talk about I was naive not taking into account things like getting hold of books etc I certainly didn't want anyone to be out of pocket. Also have had a couple of emails saying the next book is too upsetting and to withdraw it?? I know, I read the review and its not my cup of tea but its not compulsory to read? I'm putting this very badly, as usual, what I'm trying to say is I just wanted to start a-- read a book and talk about it like you would a dvd? Please let me know how you'd like it continue? Nominations and votes or anything else? I won't be offended in fact I'll be relieved to get some input! lol

I'd love to join your club Mike, but....I have 2 on the go just now, and I got so many for my birthday! I have read DAVE PELZER's books, so sad. Ragged trousered philanthropist, Lorna doone. I'll get around to the rest in my own time. If you are still at it in a couple of months.......can I still join? Deanna

Shirley, Snow Falling on Cedar came up earlier on the thread, I looked it up on Amazon to see what it was about and it is now on my 'wish list'. One in my waiting to be read pile is The Binding Chair - Kathryn Harrison - described as 'The magical tale of a young orphan's adventures after she flees rural China for turn-of-the-century Shanghai' Must say this thread has given me several books to look out for, even if we don't actually choose to read them as a group. Jude, yes I think so, someone else mentioned the name change earlier on the thread. Not sure if I'll read a child called it, i've read the one that i think is a sequel by the child's brother, and excerpts of a child called it. Found it extremely sad so I'll have to see. Ann Glos

Jude Have you come across the 'Fighting Fantasy' series by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone? They are game books. My son read them as a teenager and they seem to have had a revival recently as my friends 13 year old is in to them now. They may be something your godson would find intersting. There is a website www.fightingfantasygamebooks(.)com if you want to find out more Dee x
