Well I don't know what I am - I don't call myself posh or common. Private convent educated - but I was growing up in a two bed house with my mum, gran and greatgran at the time. Put myself through higher education whilst living with two male friends - we had mattresses, no beds, no heating, no coverings of any kind on the floors, no hot water, hand washing all clothes etc. in the bath etc. etc. Now, other people call me posh. I live in a large 5 bed, drive a nice little convertable, and I've done very well for myself career wise, I don't have to work right now. Haven't worked for a couple of years and I'm only 26. Certainly doesn't make me any better than any other decent human being - just as when I was struggling I wasn't a lesser person than anyone else.

My five-year-old grandson asked, the other day, 'Does the Queen wear knickers?' Is that one of the criteria for poshness? Len

I used to work with someone who said 'we all come out of the same place!' and I think he had a good point!

Hi Bob, I think people who refer to themselves as 'one' are posh LOL. and people who call batches, baps ( if you don't know what a batch is it's a roll but it's not a roll cos it's a batch, as in a sandwich.) My bf asked if I want a sausage roll and I have to ask if he means roll or batch. AL ( sorry to all those I have confused)

Does it depend on what one does for wark or ones breeding or back grind. Or if you say 'ears' for yes. Or say rind-a bite. What is 'Posh' apart from 'port out starboard home' or is it down to plenty of 'Wonga' Regards to all

I'm educated (only because I went to school in the days when you went to a Grammar school if you passed the 11+) and I think I'm articulate because I have always had a great love of the English language. I wouldn't say I was 'well spoken' except for when I pick up the phone lol. Unfortunately though, I'm not minted David (can you lend me a fiver to get into this blooming FHS thingy on Saturday?). Mandy :) x

It has been my experience that the biggest snobs can be found amongst those who started out humble! For instance, I worked with this woman who one day made a comment about council tennants keeping coal in the bath. I plucked up the courage to explain the origins of this urban myth, i.e. early council houses had bathrooms downstairs, next to the coal bunker. Realising she had rubbed me the wrong way somewhat, she admitted there and then she had been a council tennant herself once! (No offence to former council tennants who haven't become snobs, myself included...)

I might have posh tendencies then. I bought an ex council house ...

Some where in between....was brought up in a terraced house - no bathroom, no hot running water, no inside toilet but given a good education and the knowledge that I could aspire to something better.....in the 50's and 60's education was the way to improve your life....passing the 11 plus going to Grammar School.....I have a good life but still work for it and , I must say, resent those who are not willing to work but expect all the benefits

As Emma said, does anyone know what makes you common or posh now? I suppose I generalise and tend to think being posh is a combination of being educated, well-spoken, articulate and minted lol
