Hi Dee and Ann (and Mike, who I'm sure will read this!!) I will be back at the library on Tuesday, so will have a little rummage! I am fairly easy about which classics - unless I have read them already of course!! - and I think the contrasting books idea is a good one. Hopefully Mike will let one of us know what he thinks too, and the other GReaders! See you Sunday Dee!! Maz. XX |

Hi Dee I have only just managed to get a day in the Life of from the library so will take it on holiday next week to read. At the moment i am re reading the other one which I have as a trilogy. (But this one wont be going on holiday with me). If we are going to have two books I think it would be a good idea to have two lists, one of lighter reads and one of more 'meaty' reads. The second could include classics. if we put them all in one list it may be that the lighter books get passed over which might put some people off starting to read any of them. Plenty of classics I haven't read including the two you mention, also some Austen, Bronte, Dickens. Mike please message me if you agree/disagreee with anything you see on here. Hope you are OK Ann Glos |

Hi folks (and Mike if you are looking in) Has anyone started reading this month's books yet? I have re read 'It' and also read the brothers story. Have now made a start on 'A Day in The Life' and am finding it very interesting. Also got hold of the book about Auschwitz that accompanied the TV series of the same name, which I intend to read next. Many years ago I read The Gulag Archipelago and am trying to get hold of that so I can re read it. Maz Any thoughts on some classics for next month? I've never read Mark Twain and fancy maybe Tom Sawyer or Huckelberry Finn. Another one I fancy is Sketches by Boz - Dickens. Last year on the course I was doing we read Humphrey Clinker by Smollett, but that was hard going. Dee xx |

If it follows the usual pattern, then Mike's threads will remain - they only go if he is completely removed from the site. Maz. XX |

I suggest we all make a note of the choice for July. You may not know but Mike has been suspended for some reason best known to GR and whoever was mean enough to report him. If they remove this thread we will have to start another one. Ann Glos |

Maz I am tempted to reply with 'Hello Campers' - but that has strange undertones these days!!!!! Perhaps if we are still going to have two books each month one could be a classic and the other a non classic. Dee xx |

Hi Dee, (or should I say Hi Dee Hi??!! - sorry...) Why not suggest some for the vote. I am up for that too. Will have a look at our classics section at work and see what doesn't look TOO difficult! I have read quite a lot of Dickens/Hardy/Austen/Bronte in the past, but not for a long while. Good idea! Maz. XX |

Mike It's just a thought, can we have a classic next month perhaps? There are still loads of them I would like to get round to reading but probably won't unless there is some kind of incentive. Anyone else fancy a classic, or is it just me? Dee xx |

Lol Maz, How long can you keep books for in your library? You'll have to watch the vote then phone the next day to reserve -- you've got a week between 23rd - 1st :)) Or why not read and then keep notes in Word? Put on when review comes up? Ma gave me that Time Travellers Wife the other day, but she said I might not like it.. I'll read anything as long as it grips me by the second chapter! I've got a cracking one for the following month -- I didn't make a choice this time as I was going to bow out of the club lol. Enjoy xxx |

ooooo thank you Mike - sooooo excited - I will be reading BOTH of those lol!!! Have already borrowed them from the library, so will have to curb myself for a while (!) and hope no-one else wants them in the meantime. If anyone is looking for a FANTASTIC read in the meantime I can thoroughly recommend The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niefenegger (another Richard and Judy bookclub book). It is one of the best books I have read for ages - an incredible achievement for a first novel. Maz. XX ps - just re-read that 1st paragraph and I sound a rite sad old bag!!! |
