Have just been to the library and borrowed 'Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames' - anyone who wishes to peak may do so. Please feel free to ask. My surname isn't in there - but I won''t take it back yet awhile. Apologies to the Welsh, Scots and Irish. Stop Press re my surname - Oh Yes it is!

Hi PF, I've seen two surname dictionaries in our local library, one the Oxford and another, which I believe may have been Debrett's, but I can't remember, as it was some years ago. Both books were very old publications, so I'd be interested in seeing what your copy says for these two surnames - Simey Pescod. Thank you. CB >*|*<

Barratt, Barratt, Brret, Barritt, Barrott Matthew Baret c1150-5 obert Barate 1165 p(nt) Jordan barat 1185 Templars (herts); Seman Barette 1207 P(Ha) William Barrete(Barat) 1327 SR (Ess). This is a dificult name . There seems to be evidence for a derivation from OG Beroald, OFr Beraud, as has been suggested. ON Baror is found in Yorks and Lincs in DB as Bared, Bares, but there is no proof of its continued use. The commonest form is Barat and this must be fromOFr barat, ME bar(r)at, bar(r)et(te), which accounts for all the forms. The original sense in RRomantic seems to have been 'traffic, commerce, dealings and in ME 'trouble, distress' (c1230); deception, fraud (1292) contention, strife (c1300) from any of which a nickname could arise. Occasionally we may have OFr barrette'a cap' bonnet'.as an occupation name,'a maker of bonnets'. You picked a long one for first go - other coming up shortly. Sorry do not know what the abbreviations are - someone will know tho'

The abbreviations look like other sources of info the writer/ editor is referring to. Is there a list at the beginning of the book, before the listings start? please could you look up Caiger, Bramwell or Pickard, when you get a chance? xx Jen

PF, The world 'silva' in Latin means 'woods', so 'Silvatacus' as a name would mean someone who was born or lived in, or near, woods. >*|*<
