Well reckon I will be off the nippers are tired, its a fair trek to our place, so I bid you all goodnight and thanks for the bite and the sup, not often finding folks so generous. Aye and the company was lively and intreresting, and if any of you wander to Oakengates, you will find us up at The Nabb, so we might not have much but will spare a bite for our new friends

I would indeed love to sup with you. I shall bring my beautiful music box, which plays many tunes on a cylinder. It was a present from a grateful local gentleman for services rendered and will stay in the family for perpetuity. It will be just the thing to get people in the mood. I will also bring a huge side of ham, which my wife cured herself, from pigs I have bred in my red brick piggery on Bunker's Hill. And some root vegetables dug from the field I rented for my younger brother (who I rescued from the poor house) to manage. He is too busy to be here as he is taking produce to market in London in the horse and cart overnight, but I am happy that he is doing well and that we have both escaped the poverty of our childhood. I can feel a new expression on my face I can feel a glowing sensation taking place I can hear the guitar playin' lovely tunes Every time that you walk in the room I close my eyes for a second and pretend it's me you want Meanwhile I try to act so nonchalant I feel a summer's night with a magic moon Every time that you walk in the room Baby it's a dream come true (dream come true) Standin' right alongside of you Wish I could show you how much I care But I only have the nerve to stand and stare I can feel a something pounding in my brain Just anytime that someone speaks your name Oh, the trumpets sounds and I hear thunder boom Every time that you walk in the room Every time that you walk in the room Every time that you walk in the room

May I please join in and bring my beloved wife Annie? We are the great grandparents of Angela in Kent. We've had a very, very bad year this year - our 2 first born sons have died within the last couple of months, both of meningitis. The eldest was only 18 months old. We are very sad but life must go on and I haven't let our family tragedy interfere with my business or my responsibilities as parish clerk. In fact I attended a vestry meeting only the day after the youngest died because there were important matters to discuss - after all as well as parish clerk I am also a church warden, sexton and overseer of the poor. I am a very good person to have around at parties. I was born in Wiltshire, the son of a poor farmer and publican who knew how to entertain at the Boot Inn, Warminster until he and my mother were taken from us. I found my fortune in London by gaining a employment as a footman to a wealthy retired admiral. He and his wife hosted many parties and I was glad to be of assistance. With my tall stature, striking good looks, and properly respectful demeanour I was very popular with his guests. Now I have married (the housemaid) and moved to Kent to run my own village grocery business life is a lot quieter. But I quickly became secretary of the local social club and often help out at the houses of the local gentry when they have house parties and need extra help - my services are highly regarded. But I have never forgotten my humble roots - 2 of my younger brothers were put in the workhouse when our parents died (one of whom I rescued and brought to live with me), and I take my responsibilities to the poor law union very seriously. When I die in 1925 I will have the biggest funeral ever seen in the village, with the lowliest paupers as well as the highest local dignitaries attending. I will feel as much, if not more, at home at a party in the workhouse as one in a big house. Henry Albert Whatley Master Grocer and Parish Clerk North Cray, Kent 1861-1925
