Googled: The Wassail Song is among the best known of the traditional wassail songs, and was well-known throughout England by the middle 19th century. It's roots, however, certainly go back even further. Rev. Ian Bradley makes the excellent point that the tradition of wassailers going door to door, singing and drinking to the health of those whom they visit, goes back to pre-Christian fertility rites where the villagers went through orchards at mid-winter singing and shouting loudly to drive out evil spirits, and pouring cider on the roots of trees to encourage fertility. The Wassailing Of Trees It was only later that these traditions became associated with 'luck visits' made around the neighborhood, together with general merry-making (and, as Rev. Bradley pointed out, 'fortified by copious quantities of alcohol'). Soon, these traditions would merge with the waits who traveled the streets of the cities (and who were paid to sing and play during the holidays). And voila! we have a tradition: wassailing.

SusyQ - yes I actually did set the chimney on fire! used to do it regularly out bush - but have only done it twice in Canberra!! hee hee Jude DIY - I know the chorus of that wassail song. To Wassail (Middle English waes hael) is to be merry - with drink usually - during the festive season :0 But there was also a custom to go around singing or just knocking on doors with your wassail bowl, and the householder was bound to give you something. If they did it was good luck for them, if they didn't you wish them bad luck!! Anna - pelvic thrusts? I'm not going there! :)

Hi all Rotten dirty stinking bucket of pitch - wrote a huge reply and lost it. It's blowing a gale here - good day to be inside. Have also had to catch up on medical stuff - blood tests for blood sugar, cholesterol etc - just know I will be in trouble with the good doctor next week. ALso went back to the physio and it's official - I'm not allowed to do any jobs which require me to bend forward! Hubby is on notice. Apparently one of the discs in my lower back is stuffed - no space left between the vertebrae - so it's causing 'neural compression'. So - more physio, exercises etc to help the core muscles support the spine. Had a good look at the grave finder for Brisbane last night and found some rellies - can get death certificates but unfortunatley before 1949 there wasn't much info on them in QLd. Flakey - J for Jillaroo - boots, jeans, western shirt and acubra. R for Rough Rider - use your imagination!!! :>)) Spurs and a whip come to mind ........... Can't sit at the puter for too long - have to get up and do pelvic thrusts. :>(( Cheers Anna

Hi Wattlers, Still here, roof still on, no trees down, very very windy, sun shining, and cold. Started in shorts and t shirt, now into track pants and just about to put on jumper. We had a short storm yesterday, then one a bit longer with hail and no power from about 2pm to 6.30pm. Think this cold front is blowing up from darn sarf. Mary, Sophie is much better now thanks, the sore is healing up nicely. Trifley, glad you are feeling a bit better. Lets hope its all up hill from now. Ducky, where are you, hope all is well. Anna, sorry to hear about your back, you have my complete sympathy. I put mine out again at the weekend. Just starting to feel a bit more normal. Luckily the sciatica didn't kick. ( says SuzyQ, touching her head for good luck). Jillaroo, is it this week or next when Ron goes for his op. I have it as the 24th. My Lucy hates the thunder and lightning also. Sophie sits and watches it. Yvette, hope you get a really really good job, that pays really really well. Vonny did you really set the chimney on fire? Laurie, where are you. Hope you got home safely. Yes, the picture of Lew with a bus full of school kids is mind boggling. She would either have them all singing 70's songs, or as some one else suggested, all sitting calm, full of pink and purple lollies. pmsl. Be afraid kids, be very afraid. If i don't post don't worry I am still lurking, it's just that I am trying to rest my hands because of the CTS. (((((((((((((((((((((to everyone))))))))))))))))))))) Luv SuzyQ

out of the blue... starting with r - a rapper with plenty of bling or i know it doesn't start with r, but eldest son went to one recently as a knight. purchase kids knight pop over cloak thingy - had a front on it , included helmet, bought a sword, sheild and axe combo as well. wore his own belt and declined my tights. looked fine and he said didn't feel stupid. although kmart does have some mighty fine viking helmets - not that i've ever been tempted to buy one. i had turned the computer off, but someone turned it back on again. spent the morning alternate washing, gardening and fh ing. love yvette x

I'm still waiting for this bitterly cold weather and rain we are supposed to be having. Although its 17 deg, its not tooo bad, I was bracing myself for much colder weather. .. Think I'll take a jacket tho, when I go 15 minutes higher to babysit Lucas this afternoon. .. His mum and dad are doing more Law exams. Tassie thank you for that info re the boats. .. I know its definitely happening, because this guy is actually rowing in the enactment. I'd have thought Tasmania would be bantering with the rest of Australia, rather than their own state as to which part is the best lol (all in fun, I'd say) Tony, my packet arrived, thank you - that will keep me busy for a while :)))) On second thoughts, maybe its a little cool in the house. .. I've only been home from the dentist a little while. .. Maybe I need another jumper AND a jacket lol Have been to the dentist today .. I have the most lovely lady dentist, (she got Honours) - and she is soooo good. (Had a filling, I did). .. Not only is she good, but she is such a sweet person. .. Now I know you aren't interested, coz ya all hate dentists lol Better get moving, have to have early lunch and get away. Love Jood
