Afternoon Wattlers, Amazing the things you find out in the course of FH isn’t it? Have just recently been contacted again over a relative who marries one of my cousins a few generations back. We could never find out when he arrived in South Australia – now know that the shipping records have his name as James – he was in fact William John & his father was James, but to top it all off James’s father served in the American Civil War with the 33rd Independent Battery of New York Artillery. Question is how and why did a lad from Crediton, Devon fight in the Civil War and end his days living in South Australia. According to the web site for Civil War Veterans in Australia there is a plaque in the West Tce Cemetery for James Burridge so next trip to Adelaide I will have to go and find it. I have 2 cousins who both died in France in 1917 too. William Ireland has no known grave but is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux-France memorial – in fact the Army wrote to his father asking if they had heard from him as he had disappeared off the face of the earth. His brother Thomas was buried in the Perth Cemetery (China Wall) Zillebeke, Belgium. I had obtained their war records soon after moving to Canberra – maybe that’s when this FH thing started but when I dug a bit deeper I came across details on the Red Cross Wounded and Missing page on the Aust. War Memorial site. I hadn’t expected eye-witness accounts of their deaths and hope that the family never knew the extent of Thomas’ injuries. Fanny – I had a murderess at my wedding reception – she was only 4 at the time tho – you never know how people will turn out do you? Don’t have any convicts – yet – who knows what else may turn up but I do have another murderer – he committed suicide 2 days later and a great uncle who died from alcoholism & exposure – apparently his name was never spoken again by the family – well until some of us started digging around – nothing remains secret then. What was scandalous then we view differently now. Well I hope the girls are having a whale of a time – look forward to pixelated piccies on the news – lol Hi Cilla - hope you can get your health probs sorted soon - another opinion is a good idea. Hi all Back on the net again after I managed to change Jim's password & then couldn't get on again for 2 days as I stuffed it up if anyone can muck the puter up it's me ,still haven't managed to fix my new email addy as that won't work either but if I can't work it out i will just use Jim's as the man from retrovision must be sick of me by now as i have rung him 3 times already. I am going back to to Doc's next week & we are going to find out if we can see another specialist to try & sort me out. Lara I did get your email glad that you got your safe but be warned the alarm will go off if you try to move it once you have set it up we moved ours without opening it first & you couldn't hear yourself think with the noise it made. Rural Fire Service has turned up to advise that the first near us in at the Abattoirs (again!) this time in the old rotted manure. It has been contained, but they expected to smoulder for 2-3 days yet. You can imagine the smell, wet, smouldering manure, Blah. Hello all Tony glad you found the John's record and at least know how he was killed My great uncle was killed over there in 1917 too too and I felt very sad when I found him but was lucky enough to find the email address of man who offered to go to the graves of any Australians killed over there and photograph it for you and all he asked was for a photo of the person if you had one so as he could laminate it and put it on the grave so those who visited from then on could see who rested there How generous of him don't you think so now my great uncle's photo is there on his grave and I have a photo of his grave and all the army records and the medal awarded to the family. Arvo Wattlers. Beautiful warm day in Melbin, and will continue over the weekend. Can feel a cuppla Bar-bies coming up...:>))) Some happy and sad news for me on the Genealogy research. Found the death of ( John Hull ...*Jack* )my 1st Cousin twice removed, and the nephew of my G,Grandad. John Hull was in the 2nd Battalion of the Essex Regiment and was killed on the 1st Day of the Battle of the Somme in the First World War. After being with the Battalion for approximately 15 months in France, died in France. He was shot through the head ( Sniper )...and has no known grave, but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.His unit suffered very heavy casualties. My research had lead me to find the Grandson of his half sister and he is going to post me his papers. Hope everyone is safe up north with all the fires going on around them. Re the Tassie meet: 2008 is fine with me. Barb and i will possibly still be going over in march 2007 as well. Barb want to visit her dads cousin. For peeps that are away, and the Schoolies at Broadbeach this weekend..hee hee..Av a good un, and wear your tirara's with pride...:>)))) Lots of TLC for all the sickies and /or there spouses. Hi All, My computer has a virus (don't open any emails from me cause I'm not sending any!!) I'm at work at the moment. Opened a link in an email last night at home and invited a Trojan in! BUTTER!!! Jood, the email said it came from you but my son informs me that it could just pick any address so it may not have actually been from you. be warned everyone - if a program says you need to update your flash media stuff DON'T DO IT!!! I won't be online till son can fix it. Which is a bit difficult because it is blocking all my internet access at the moment. please take me off the general emails for the moment.
