just chased up this old thread as not been on site for long time, had thyroid out completly in june/july.
so far so good. levels are nearly where they should be, op went well i guess, had problems with breathing for long time kept complaining and eventually i had camera to see if any damage internally. one side of vocal chords was paralized and other side damaged. had camera down again and paralized side has very slight movement so they wont do anything with it now, itmight come back in time they say. my calcium glands got damaged so on 6 calcium tablets a day but levels have not budged since taking them, back there in december for camera again and see what is happening with calcium. have only put on 4 llbs in weight so really pleased. will try keep informed. scar is brill, can be seen if really look but very neat few years and i dont think it will be notiecable at all. just going to read through all replies to see what i have missed

Thanks for that Pauline

No one has ever mentioned either of those facts, actually usually have my meds then tea or cereal !!!!

So who knows.

I knew statins for choloestrol do not mix with grapefruit but not thyroxine.

So 2 more things to watch.

Hopefully will make a difference.

Regards Linda :o)

Hi Grannie..... try this site!!

It is brilliant and has lots of people who give so much advice and support.

I would never have had the courage to be so assertive with my GP as I have been if it hadn't been for the support I have had from here... they all know how you feel cos they have been there!! Or are there right now.

Thanks for nudging this, Linda.... Thyroid problems can also be caused by other parts of the system not functioning well... which means that the knock on effect is that little bits of all the endocrine system play up.... and causing a raft of symptoms which don't quite fit into any category... and often the blood tests don't quite match one specific problem in one specific area!!

I am a bit of a novice at all this..... I have had dozens of tests over the last couple of months, and now feel that I am beginning to be taken notice of.

Good luck to everyone struggling to make their voice heard.

It might be useful alogside the thread of Barries

Regards Linda

PS NO my issues have not been solved actually they are worse now than when I started at the hospital 18 months ago and was discharged a year later as being OK and doing really well, though I was regaining weight by this time ?

Hi I dont have thyroid problems myself, but found this thread very informative. My sister had thyroid cancer at the age of 16 and had all of it removed including her other neck glands, she thankfully beat the disease but has had years of trouble finding the right levels and so on, she has to take calcium and thyroid replacement and really has really suffered from this and at times it makes her very depressed which is hard for her and our family. Any info on this that i can pass onto her would be great. Scarlett.

Hi everyone Had 6 monthly check up yesterday, for diabeties and thyroid. Thyroid levels are in 'normal' range at mo - although the lower end - so still on 100mcg of thyroxine - have to go back for repeat blood test end July, for thyroid and diabeties check. Mind you I still feel tired and sometimes I want to stay in bed all day, although get to work. Work collegues - can't of don't seem to understand why sometimes I feel so tired. Men!!!! Diabeties wise - apart from the fact I'm not losing as much weight as I or the Docs are happy with, is fairly ok. just put me on 1 more tablet to be taken at lunch time, as well as the ones at Breakfast and evening. Trouble is, having underactive thyroid does not help with trrying to loose weight - which I need to do - to help with diabeties. its not like am eating the wrong type of foods either, then I would not mind so much. Take care all Liz

Hi all Well Hospital apt went well Consultant was very kind and listened to me !!!!!!!!!!!!! Asked loads of questions. She thinks all my thyroid levels are OK on the present dosage. Suggests 'normal ' eating, no extremes but to be aware and to increase my exercise levels as much as possible Checking blood tests taken today for hormone levels = menopause. More blood tests tomorrow after some tablets to check steroid levels as this is a possible but unlikely problem. Also having tests tomorrow for Thyroid, Diabetes and Arthritus. Back to hospital in 6 weeks for the results Think of me please as I will end up like a pincushion Regards To everyone I'll keep you upto date when I hear anything Linda :o)

i have had over active thyroid twice which then went under. mine kicks off in pregnancy. i lost about four stone whilst pregnant, looked very ill. Had twins and everybody was amazed as always rushing around, never tired etc, came back to live near parents and family member made me go to doctors, hence thyroid problem. get tested every year now and i am borderline now, put weight and more back on, feel tired all the time etc, but doctors say not low enough for tablets, i think it is just to save money my self. another point no one seems to have mentioned, if left untreated u can end up having a nervous breakdown. things can get that bad.

Will be thinking about you this afternoon!! I've only just come across this thread & a lot of it rings true for me!! I remember when I switched Dr's a couple of years ago having a blood test. I told the nurse I was feeling tired all the time & had issues with my weight. I was put onto iron tablets as I was slightly anaemic. They told me I was borderline under-active thyroid. I have put on approx 2 stone since last summer but have put that down to other health issues but reading the list of symptoms am now having second thoughts. I'm seeing my Dr soon and may ask to be tested again!! BTW - I was told by a friend who has thyroid problem that if it goes undetected for a long period of time that you can develop mental health problems & that's why back in Victorian times 'Lunatic Assylums' were so full!! Has anyone else heard this??
