I lived in Bethnal Green a block off flats in Massingham Street just off Globe Road .....worked at the local estate Agents/Solicitors Office called Cornillie & Co. Married in Bow Reg Office :)) Wonderful community life we had there , everyone looking out for each other............. taking it in turns to wash the stairwell on your balcony etc LOL My granny was from Leytonstone . I was born in Herts :)) My OH's family have deep roots in the East End : Hackney ( many buried in Abney Park Cem) Bethnal Green - some only a stones throw from the flat mentioned afore , Mile End, Whitechapel and so on.

I can't visualise Doric road......... but there was a block of flats called Doric House ...... prolly on the road LOL........... Wilmot street a stones throw from Bethnal green Tube stattion. Oh I agree those were the days............ I live in Ireland ( North ) and to be honest disregard media hype about it's troubles , its like being in a time warp 'cos you can leave doors & windows unlocked .......... thankfully no stairwell to clean these days but a huge garden to mow instead LOL!! Morning -x-

My family comes from Lewisham, Deptford, Dartford and they were all registered in Greenwich or Deptford. My grandmother was evacuated from there during world war 2, she came to Wales and never returned home. She said she lived in 'Bows Bells' ?? but where, I can't remember where she said, I wished I listened to her stories more. She was so proud of her background and I loved her cockney accent. I would love to visit the East end and find out where exactly she lived. Cheryl xxxxx

Cheryl, your mum was from south of the river - Bow is north. It is an old saying that you are a cockney if you live within the sound of Bow Bells. I think its a pretty loose term really, certainly I should think Deptford people are thought of cockney, even though it would have to be a good following wind for them to hear the bells of Bow!

What a lovely thread....... I was born in Hackney at the Mothers Hosp, some people would have called the bit where we lived Lower Homerton, although it was officially Clapton, just down the Road from Hackney Hospital. Dad still lives there! Then whem we married we went to London Fields. Mums lot were from Bethnal Green, then Hackney round the back of St John at Hackney church, where Tesco's is now in Morning Lane. Dad's lot from Walthamstow - Islington then moved into Kingmead Est! Father in Law was born in Poplar Mother in Law (and my OH) was born in Hackney, not far from Clapton Pond. We have a good pedigree of being 'East London' but as you can see from my name, I don't live there any more! Suex
