I must give her credit. She has worked for 10 months for this. Scrimped and saved, and paid her room and board along the way. There were 3 of them going originaly, but he others backed out. She was going no matter what! I don't know where she gets her determination from ;) Deb

Hope your daughter has a great time. But here's a little tale............. My husband is a london taxi driver and he said a very young girl with a big suitcase flagged him down, she said she was in London from Canada and had no where to stay and could he take her to a hostel! He went to a church near Leicester Square and asked people who were outside for somewhere suitable for a young person, he thought these people though looked a bit druggy and didn't want to leave her with them, as they said, so he took her to a hostel in Poland Street (West End) he then found out she was just seventeen, had hardly any money ( £10) and the person she should have meet at the Airport 'didn't turn up' Well he gave her our home telephone number, paid for the room for the weekend, and left. On the monday she rang us, we then phoned her father in saskatween! (wrong spelling I know) who was named of all things Mr Corleone!, made arangeements with her mother for her to go back to Canada, picked her up on Tuesday..........took her to heathrow and gave her money to buy food. So the moral of the tale is..there are good people out there, willing to help and your daughter will be safe and I am sure have a great time, she sounds very sensible.

Just an update. I have talked to her twice already. I received an email from her saying that she misses me 'tons', and is homesick. She cried last night in bed. On the posative side - she is legal drinking age over there! So she is quite proud that she can for the first time, buy a drink that is legal! She also saw Liverpool with the cup. She has taken pics for her Dad ( a BIG Liverpool supporter) Deb

Sue In Oz Report 15 May 2006 15:53

Hi Deb, I know exactly how you feel. My daughter left Oz at the same age to stay in London. She travelled alone and hadn't been on a plane since she was five years old. She ended up staying away for 6 months but had a great time. Spent Christmas in London and New Year in Scotland. I missed her so much, but was so proud of her. She is now 24 and has a 1 year old daughter. Best wishes Sue

Well, the next leg of her journey starts tomorrow. She is off on her 'European Tour' Monday. She emails me every day and she seems quite at home now! She will be meeting up with Maz - East End after the tour. Deb

Lyn Report 21 May 2006 11:58

Deb - she will love it!! Going at a good time of year too. My daughter (then 23) did 6 mths backpacking UK, Europe,Scandinavia etc last year on her own. She didn't even join up with tours - just got out there and did it. She is a tiny 5', 43kg who looks about 16, she had a ball and met so many people (older couples in particular befriended her) She took 2500 photos whilst away and still talks about the wonderful trip. Your daughter will remember this trip for ever. Wish her luck from down under. Lyn

Thanks Lyn! I'm over my nervous period (for now!). I'll be glad when she is back on her (new) familiar ground. I'm thinking of going over there in the summer. It has been 7 years since I went 'home' Deb

Deb - forgot to say my son did the backpacking too at 18 and stayed away on and off for years, till he came back from USA with a young lass now his wife (of 8 yrs). My kids get the travel bug off me - I emigrated to Oz alone at 20. Remember when you were young? You just did things without really bothering to worry about it. Keep us posted on her travels! Lyn

I had to laugh... My Aunty (younger than me) was woken up at 3am by a noise in the street. Guess who? Apparently she and my cousin (17) had a night out on the town and were sitting on the pavement killing themselves laughing. A good thing, but not at 3am!! She reminds me of myself when I was her age. I would never do anything like that (in Whistler a little while ago) at my age! Deb
