Good morning/afternoon Girls, since I quit smoking the momey I spent per year is helping to pay half my mortgage, try not to tempt fate by getting close to cigarette outlets and the sooner your get rid of any cigarettes around you the better it is for you, because if they are there then you will smoke them. The temptation is always there, 'I've done so well, just one won't hurt' is rubbish it is NIc O'tine trying to get it fix and have you on the down ward path again, you will have to be on your guard the rest of your life you are never an ex-smoker but a non-smoker but keeping your motivation up. Lets face it did actually having a cigarette really change the situation, or did it give you a pause, could you have done something else instead? James |

Julie - welcome! I think I saw you post somewhere else about quitting smoking that's kinda why I nudged the thread up, 7 weeks well done you! Maz - well done hunny, you are doing so well it may not seem it but you are! Last week I had no cigs on monday, then had 2 on Tuesday evening, then didn't have any at all Weds, Thurs, & Fri and felt so good about it then come sat morning I had one but i didn't beat myself up about it instead i got my trainers on and went for a 3 hr walk with the dog to get away from the house and the second hand smoke which was making me crack, when I got back I spent the rest of the evening on the puter and didn't think about having a fag and I haven't had one since the one on sat morning and to be honest I haven't even thought about having one. I went to the shop tonight again taking the dog wiv me and went the scenic route to get my exercise in, my brother had asked me to buy him 30 Lambert & Butler which I did put them straight in my bag and then had a panic attack coz then were there, so popped a piece of gum in and walked the same route back to the house and have been fine since and I didn't crack! Dragonfly & Jeanie - I hope you both get better really soon giving up the fags is the best thing you can do, just think if you had not taken that step things could be a whole lot worse with your health - you are both doing fantastically well and I know it has been very hard for you both but when your having a bad time find this thread and post we are all here to support you! Part of my mantra at the moment is that I am treating it the same as I treat my weight loss with weight watchers, they have a saying if you have a bad day strike it out and start again tomorrow it is not a race it is part of having a healthy lifestyle. Hugs to you all Alaina PS Maz I know what you look like now! I saw your pic on the GC Photos nothing like I imagined you to be lol but nice to put a face to a name at last!, I'm hoping to put my pic on there tonight so you can see what I look like! |

Hi all, had a bad day saturday - v naughty - but patched back up Sunday and coped. yesterday I had a half in the evening - alternative was stringing up the kids, thought half a fag was best lol. today I have a stinking cold so won't be going near any. don't need a patch today either. only got a couple left, so need to arrange with nurse to pick up repeat prescription for the next couple of weeks. Alaina - you are right about it being different for different people. when I gave up 4 years ago I used nothing and found it so easy. this time though I am really struggling. everyone seems to be doing really well - hang in there folks :-)) ! Morning! Carol hunny you are doing so well and you have been a great support to me which you well know! How is everybody else doing? I have got up this morning and there is my mum puffing away! Because the sun is shining through the window you can just see this layer of smoke in the rays and I have to walk through that every morning it isn't nice but I can't force my mum to stop. I think that is what is making me more determined to give up, save some money up and try to find my own place so I don't have to keep breathing in this second hand smoke. Anyway off to work now, have a great day everyone! Love Alaina xxx |

Hi there! I thought I would nudge this thead up as I have noticed there are few new peeps about who have stopped smoking or are supporting people who are giving up. I've also noticed that the discussion of the smoking ban in pubs has come up again which is really interesting to read. My motivation for quitting didn't come about because of the up and coming ban but because of the following reasons: 1. two weeks before I decided to quit a work colleague of mine who was only 24 years old died suddenly of an undiagnosed heart condition, his life style was that of drinking every weekend as you do and smoking like a trooper which I don't think helped things. 2. I have a 3 yr old niece who I love to bits and everytime she comes round to our house (I live with my mum) she breathes in the smoke and I didn't want to add to that anymore, My sister is also expecting her 2nd child and I do not want to smoke around him when he arrives (due 4th July) 3. It was costing me too much, I smoked Richmond kingsize which are roughly £4.54 for 20 where I live, when I added that up over a month (bearing in mind i was smoking 25-30 a day and about 70 on a weekend) I was in complete and utter shock. 4. My health was suffering I was starting to not be able to breath properly on a morning due to the crap that had collected in my throat over night and I was breathless just walking up a hill (I'm not overweight so I knew it wasn't that) 5. I was bored with it and often questioned why I was doing it 6. I was fed up of smelling of smoke and feeling like people were watching me if I stood at the bus stop having a fag and having to move away from other people around me who didn't smoke and apologising all the time. I am now on my 4th week of giving up it is hard and I have not been a saint I admit but it is getting easier and I now off the patches and using just gum which is helping so much. I have now broken the habit aswell, I'm not thinking about cigs as much if at all and have even started testing myself like today I actually bought some magazines and paid at the cig kiosk without even thinking about asking for some fags aswell. All those that have tried to quit and failed keep trying this is my second attempt and I'm determined this time, but prepare yourself like I did you will have more success. I got loads of free informative info from the NHS website (gosmokefree.co.uk) and set myself a quit date which has the title say's was the 9th of April then surround yourself with a support network like this thread I would not have been able to keep going without the support and love from the members on genes this is my crutch now lol Anyway speech over how is everyone doing? Hugs Alaina xxx |

Well done girls, once you get a sense of achivement at the number of days not smoked it also reinforces you not smoke, which is why the Quit meter is so important in keeping you motivated, because you can see how you are doing, you don't want to go back to the old ways. It makes you wonder where all the money you spent on cigarettes went to. James |

Hi Guys I'so glad you are all still on this journey with me and so proud of you all for sticking with it. Well I have not been on computer for a couple of days the reason being is I think I might have overdosed on the nicotine gum on Monday either that or I did actually catch a 24 hour sickness bug! I started throwing up on Monday night and carried on all through the night wasn't nice! I could hardly move yesterday let alone smoke a fag or chew the gum so I had absolutely no nicotine yesterday and do you know I feel fab today really weird, I've only had 3 pieces of gum today and I feel fine not even a hint of wanting a fag. I think I might have got through the absolute worse now, I'm just concerned that it hasn't taken me as long as I thought it would do so maybe like people losing weight at different rates, people giving up fags can be different rates aswell what do you lot think? or is it maybe down to how determined you are to stop? who knows all I know is I'm where I want to be : )) James - I did the quit meter (www(.)quitmeter(.)com) and since I went to bed at 10pm ish on the 8th April - to now 2 weeks, 2 days, 19 hours, 55 minutes,I have not smoked 400 fags and I have saved spending £95.34 on fags! try it girls you'll be pleasantly surprised alaina xx |
