Dublin Rickshaw taxis

I came across a site recently called Dublin Webcam. Its a site where you can view live action of people walking in the street. A camera is on top of a local chemist and looks towards the famous Temple Bar in Dublin City centre.

It's very entertaining as the public know the camera is there and so as you can imagine, people wave and do silly things at that camera!

But in the evenings around 11pm, people are in & out of the Temple bar and some often need a lift home or to elsewhere and so I noticed these "Rickshaw Taxis."

They are a 3 wheeled bicycles with a covered carriage attached. No seat belts either! I have seen the speed they come down the narrow street. sometimes up on the pavement and wondered if they were insured? Late night revellers come out of the pub and jump in the back but what if it tipped up or rolled over and the people were injured?

so i had a bit of a dig around and the info I found was quite astonishing.

The drivers are mostly Brazilian students who rent out these Rickshaws from 35 euros a night. They rent them for the weekend and can make between 350-500 euros which is said to pay for their student accommodation etc

So they are basically "self employed" but not insured, no licence or regulated and the Garda(Irish police) turn a blind eye. I also read that the company who owns the Rickshaws are fronts for money laundering etc. It stated that if the customer wanted anything "extra" for the weekend, the drivers had most "things" available!

What an eye opener. When i was watching them on the webcam, i did wonder if the local council employed them but scarily not.

Would anyone on here use them if they were on holiday there in Dublin?

We used to see them a lot in London but never used them. I had no idea there was anything dubious about them though.

I googled the London ones, and found that some are registered and act professionally, but a lot are run on the shady side of the law, and they basically promote brothels and prostitution.

I think I would play safe and avoid them like the plague.
