I am really impressed with the area that we have just stayed for a week. We stayed near Auchencairn, in Dumfriese and Galloway 7 miles from Castle Douglas on Bengairn country lodges. Three of us two bedrooms a lovely well appointed lodge overlooking a little loch InThe middle if a working farm, surrounded by fields of cattle and sheep.
It was so peaceful and the whole area was the same, not much traffic, lovely friendly people. Uncommercialised little beaches.

A really lovely relaxing holiday. I would recommend this place to anyone.

So glad you enjoyed AnnG. Makes such a difference when you can truly relax and enjoy the surroundings. We have near empty beaches of white sand here and its truly scenic.

Beautiful area.
My father was born and brought up there, a bit further west, in Newton Stewart, and I spent many happy childhood holidays there with relatives.

Don't advertise it too much, or it will become as over-run with campervans, etc, as the Highlands are!

I used to live in an old showman's caravan in Kirkpatrick Fleming.

Despite being a stone's throw from Gretna Green, the ex never considered going there to get married!! :-(

It was, however, where I had my first 'tame' wild bird friend, and where I left my 1930's Mickey Mouse toy that would be worth quite a bit, now!

There were a few smal caravan sites and you would not want there to be too many as the narrow roads wouldn’t stand it.
What I particularly liked was that in the two towns we visited, Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbrightshire. There were no ‘chain’ shops only small individual retailers. And cafes/coffee places.
