I wonder if the illegitimate birth you were looking at was for either Sarah Keogh (29/5/1914) or Mary Jane Hanley (30/5/1914), both of whom were illegitimate, and born in Coombe Hospital, Dublin.

On the same page as their births - on irishgenealogy.ie - , there's the birth of a Hugh McDougald (22/5 /1914 - NOT illegitimate).
His middle name isn't written clearly, but there's a note in the left-hand margin clarifiying what it is - which says "Copied WANLAS".

Part of the right-hand leg of the first A appears to be missing, making it look like WPNLAS. There's a circle round the words, and also one round his middle name, with a line linking the two circles.

This note refers only to Hugh . It's just to make clear what his middle name is - nothing to do with adoption or anything else. He was born at 39 Adelaide Road, and not in a hospital, and his parents were married. (Cecil John McDougald and Helen nee Greaney.)

Hi everyone.
I’m researching a child that was born in a Dublin hospital in 1914 to a single girl, who was given up and unofficially adopted by family or friends of the child’s father.
The original birth registration book has a note on the outer left of the record with an abbreviation, so I’m hoping someone can help me understand what this means if it relates to amendments for later adoption records .
It states WANLAS or WPNLAS ( the 2nd letter isn’t clear due to record age and photocopies)
