Asthma triggers

I have put this thread up today to warn others about some ingredients in food that can trigger your asthma and make you wheezy.

Earlier last week, I had ordered some boiled sweets with my Tesco order. They were Foxes Fruit punch, similar to Foxes Fruits. As I have been inside for a week due to the weather,I found in the evenings my throat was dry.

On Sunday, I put 2 sweets in my mouth(they are much smaller now!) and within a minute of finishing it, my airways closed up and I was struggling to breathe.I took 6 puffs over 30 minutes of my inhaler and eventually my airways began to open. In all It took an hour to get back to normal.

I checked the packet before I ate them and the one preservative that triggers my asthma is Potassium Sorbate but it was not listed so I thought i would be ok.

Potassium Sorbate is in a lot of things such as, Mango chutney, strawberry jam, most fizzy pop even diet juice so I avoid all of those.

Today I had a closer look at the ingredients and it said "contains sulphites."

So I looked this up and sure enough it says that sulphites can cause allergy reactions which include, trouble breathing and wheezyness amongst other things.

So I shall be even more careful from now on. This was the first asthma attack in a long while and have no wish to go through another one as its extremely scary when you are struggling to breathe.

So if anyone on here is an asthmatic and stays away from certain foods, remember that Sulphites can also affect your asthma too.
