Since moving here, I noticed a pile of moss had accumulated on my garden table.
I'd assumed it had fallen off the roof when it had rained heavily.

On Sunday, in my semi-permanent position in the kitchen, I noticed something (not a bird) flying past the window. I opened the door to investigate. It was a large clod of moss.
Whilst stood there, a jackdaw flew off the roof - dropping another clod of moss as it passed. The jackdaw still on the roof gave a cheerful squawk.

I just looked out the door - there is moss everywhere - the bin, back doorstep, lawn etc are covered - the jackdaws have been busy!
Apparently, crows, magpies, blackbirds. jackdaws etc lift the moss and eat the insects underneath - but do they have to then throw it as far as possible?

The plus side is, it's more environmentally friendly than getting a firm in to clear the moss off the roof. :-D

The down side is, it looks like I'll have to clear the moss out of the gutter. :-(

There's me thinking it was blowing off or shifting with the rain. Now I know what the heavy footed birds are doing on the roof.

I would advise against adding a shotgun shape to your scarecrows. ;-)

We have had that happen for years - it’s the starlings that do it here
