Have you tried identifying cousins for Samuel, to see if any of them fit? Though a lot of WWI records have been lost.

Also, was the cousin definitely a Gridley, or is the field open to cousins on Samuel's mother's side of the family as well?

How far have you gone back ?

I am trying to find a connection between Samuel William Gridley b 1892 in London in what is now SE22 and George Amos Gridley b 1892 in a similar location.
Samuel came from a line originating in Somerset, George from a line originating in Suffolk.
Both joined up in 1914 but Samuel was not allowed into the army as he was a Maintenance Engineer in Woolwich Arsenal. George was allowed into the army and died in 1916 on The Somme.
A conversation with my sprightly 93 year old Aunt/Godmother recently advised me that Samuel (her Dad) tried to join up with a cousin!!!!
As Samuel and George lived very near each other and shared a surname, I wonder if they were "the cousins"?
