Having read the article it is only the paper notes that
will be affected!
Not the polymer banknotes.
So that was very misleading Dermot.

The |£1 coins? I changed them.
I'd already looked to see their worth, and it was a lot of hassle (and bus fare) to get £5 for a £1 coin!!

I found 3 x £1 notes and took them to the bank years after they went out of circulation.

In hindsight, I rather wish I had kept them :-(

I found a load of old £1 coins. Took them to the bank, and the teller said
'Some of these may be worth more than £1 are you sure you want to change them?' :-D

Years ago we found a £20 note that had been under the bed and out of circulation for 10 years and had a new given to us.

Or spend them before then because when they're banked, the bank will hold on to them rather than circulate them as the end time draws near.

My hairdresser took one recently that had been in my purse since March 2020 lockdown.

I have two left - I might have a rare old time with them (or not). ;-)

But you can always get the face value of these notes at a bank. If there are still banks open for business.

There are no £50 notes of any sort in this house, but there just might be a paper £20.

The Bank of England will withdraw the legal tender status of the paper £20 and £50 notes after September 30 2022, and it is encouraging anyone who has them at home to spend or deposit them at their bank or Post Office.
