So do you know the adopted name and trying to work backwards or looking for the aunt and you know the parents name/s

thanks guy i am researching an aunt that was adopted not 100% sure where or when but constance was my great nans name and m could have been for maty my nans name. we believe so was born out of wedlock but i dont think i am going to get the answers as i have so little details not sure where to go from here

"Normally an event (Birth, Marriage or Death) will be registered soon after the event occurs and will be included in the index for the same quarter or the one following it.

However, if an event is registered later then it will be included in the register some time after the event occurred. In this case the quarter in which the event should have appeared is often annotated with a (hand written) entry (the late entry reference) that points to the quarter in which the event has been registered (the late entry). This is done by putting into the Page column text like

which means that the event was registered in the December quarter of either 1839 or 1939 depending on the year of the entry"

ArgyllGran, I deleted the post, as I'd left my dad's surname in - as you found out, not too common a name, and easy to find!
Then my laptop startd playing up! However, I did post an alternative :-D

Years ago, I went up to the GRO, and found the original registration.
The J/42 referred to journals held there. When I went to find dad, the page had been ripped out!

On FreeBMD, Constances registration is very similar to my dad's. The only real way to sort it out is to get a cetificate.

Shirley they were legitimised by the act of getting a new certificate. If you didn’t get one then you were still classed as illegitimate.

An illegitimate child whose parents later married each other legitimised the child so a new certificate would be issued in the married surname

Looking up my dad's Birth on Free BMD, it says similar.
My dad was born Gordon J---- in 1926.(gran wasn't married)
His mum married in 1942, and dad was re-registered as Gordon D----.
On his second registration on Free BMD, it sys 5C see J/42 - which takes me back to his first registration.

There's every chance her mum or dad married someone with the same surname, so her birth certificates should give the fathers name (or not on the first registration, if her mum wasn't married.)

Maggie - re your post which you've now deleted - in case you happen to look back at this thread. [ EDIT: I see you've re-posted the details in different wording below ]:

in your dad's case, his birth under your gran's maiden surname is in the typed list in 1926.
Then at the bottom of the page there's a hand-written note referring to a later entry in June 1942 (J42) under her married name.

In June 1942 his birth is in the typed list twice. There's one entry under your gran's maiden surname, and another under her married surname..

The "see" just means that you should see the other entry in June 1959 (J59) - it's not part of the reference number.


FreeBMD is much more useful for looking up BMDs.
Hardly any of the helpers on the GR boards use GR for searching for records.

Not sure quite what you mean but, personally, I always note the quarters of the year events were registered as, for example, Q1 (Jan, Feb, March) rather than either QJ or QM so there is no muddle as I have seen one site use the first month of the quarter and another site use the last month of the quarter which, I think leads to confusion.

References for certificates give you the quarter, the registration district and the page and volume number. All of which you need to order a copy. There might be an error with yours. Check it out on the free site www.freebmd.org.uk
